Ariane Cabeje's Poem 'Wandering Souls'
Wandering Souls
I wander through the night, careful not to wake the sun, only to be concealed by the darkness’ embrace.

My voice kept hoarse and quiet, as I release my secrets to the stars.
The same secrets , that the daytime keeps away from us.

I wander through the night, with the moon as my guide.
But it quickly fades away, as a new day approaches.

Now lost and afraid
I wander through the day.
-Arianne Cabeje

Out of the three poems, the first two hardly had but one or two symbols throughout. They were so short, that they hardly had enough time to get but a small message across to the reader, or atleast that 's how I saw it. However, Alberto Rios 's "Mi Abuelo" had many images which made my brain tingle with excitement for writing this paper. Besides the fact that it had the most imagery, it also was the most interesting and best imagery in my opinion.…

One of the themes in Elie Wiesel’s memoir, Night, is man’s inhumanity to man. During the Holocaust, Elie experienced a terrifying account of the Nazi death camp horror that turns him into an agonized witness to the death of his family, innocence and God. A poem by Ruth Dykstra, “What I Don’t Know”, reflects Elie’s situation and beliefs. This poem expresses Elie’s struggles as a young Jew who has lost his faith and hope.…

In "Poem by Poem" by Juan Herrera, he reflects on the shooting that happened in a church in Charleston, SC on 6/18/2015. As he reflects in this poem, he uses poetic elements such as caesuras and repetition to convey the complex feelings of pain and grief he feels, as well as trying to bring attention to how lost America's gun laws are. Herrera often uses caesuras, which is when you break the flow in the middle of the sentence. He does this very often, such as, "we can end the violence every day after every other day. " The long pause, can infer to the reader that these long pauses mean much more.…

As the Catholic Church continues to frown upon homosexuals, they continue to frown upon transsexuals to an even greater extent. They see it as even larger perversion of the (already perverted) homosexual lifestyle. At the risk of generalizing, I would argue that many transsexuals then find that they need someone or something that will not judge them and only treat them with the respect they need. La Santa Muerte helps to fill the void left by society in many North American transsexuals. With most people not liking what they do not understand or ca not explain, this makes transsexuals the perfect target for them and the Church. People cannot explain why there are transsexuals, they do not know how hard it is to be transsexual, and they…

With all of the violence in the past, and now the most recent shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, society is more scared than ever. Dylann Roof, proven to be a white supremacist, walked into a church in Charleston, South Carolina and killed innocent people. This incident hit home for so many Americans because not only did the innocent people die, but it was in one of the safest places imaginable, a church (Tauber, Michelle). Many believe that weapons are to blame for this, and others believe that racism is the main focal point. This is not the first of violent crimes in a local church. A poem was written by Dudley Randall about a true story that happened in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. A group of white supremacists bombed a church that belonged to Martin Luther King Jr. What they did not know was that there were four little girls playing in there at the time. The church should be a safe, quiet place one can pray to God, but these incidents indicate that violence is creeping into the most innocent of…

In American culture, suicide is considered to be one of the darkest taboos. It has the particular quality of being equally gripping and repulsive. Although suicide is seen as overtly morbid, gruesome and disturbing, it has made many people famous. Sylvia Plath, the illustrious 20th century poetess, is one of them.…

When she is around whites. What I mean by that is: she is very formal, proper, she uses bigger words when she is talking to them, she uses "nothing" instead of "nothin`" and she is very well put together when she is with whites. On the other hand, when she is with the blacks: she is informal, uses lower vocabulary and acts like we would act around her friends. you could say she takes off her "mask" when she is around blacks. In conclusion her attitude is the same she is straight forward and will tell you like it is this is similar to the poem because it is all about wearing a mask in front of other people. With the poem and chapter 12 there are very similar. you could say that Calpurnia wears a "mask" by being formal around whites, informal around…

In first stanza Dickson defines hope by comparing it to a bird, which is metaphor- a figure of speech in which an expression is used to refer to something that it does not literally denote in order to suggest a similarity. The poem examines the abstract idea of hope in the free spirit of a bird. Hope is an animate thing, it is inanimate, but giving hope feathers she begins to create an image hope in our minds. Feathers represent hope because feathers enable you to fly and offer the image of flying away to a new hope, a new beginning. Broken feather of a person breaks the hope of the person. Their wings have been broken and they no longer have the power to hope... “That perches in the soul” in these lines Dickinson continues to use the imagery (the ability to form mental images of things or events) of a bird to describe hope. Hope doesn’t need spoken words. Hope is always there. Hope, she is implying, perches or roosts in our soul. The soul is the home for hope. It can also be seen as a metaphor. Hope rests in our soul the way a bird rests on its perch. Birds never stop singing their song of hope.…
