We're members of the animal kingdom and fear is an involuntary thing. He also believed, Socrates, “that living life consistent with the intention of understanding the immortal will result in allowing an understanding of the soul without the delusion of societal norms. Socrates states, "I want to explain to you how natural it seems to me that a man who really devoted his life to philosophy should be confident in the face of death, and hopeful of winning the greatest of prizes in the next world after death...” (2011, fall) Ordinary people seem not to realize that those who really apply themselves in the right way to philosophy are directly and of their own accord preparing themselves for dying and death. Socrates has no fear of death. Devoting his life to Philosophy and sacrificing all the normal societal desires, Socrates understands not to…
Epicurus was a materialist who believed ‘human beings are purely material creatures’ (Epicurus 1998a, p.47), that the human body is complexly composed of atoms and when people die their bodies disintegrate along with their minds. Therefore, Epicurus believed it to be impossible for human beings to experience death. For Epicurus this makes the fear of death completely unnecessary, for ‘what is no trouble when it arrives is an idle worry in anticipation’ (de Botton 2000, p. 59). Epicurus thought that if one were to fear their death, they would only provoke unwanted worry and pain in their life. Furthermore, if one were to live a life with worry and pain,…
Rosenbaum states “Epicurus offered a remedy for our attitudes towards our death” (Rosenbaum 175). People spend minutes, hours sometimes days preoccupied with the thought of death. Conjuring death in their mind is worse than actually experiencing it. Indeed, if something has no impact on a person, then there is no need of thinking about it. Once in a while it’s fine to think about death but it should take control of our lives. Instead one should try as much as possible to maximize pleasures and minimize pain. Evidently when one does so then the attitude towards death is no longer about fear but about how to escape the mere fact of…
During the Backwash of War, a man named Rollin had been awarded in extremis for his heroic actions, but he feared the award because it indicated that he was dying (Motte 517). Afterwards, a father named Antoine had feared sending his son to war, only to have his fears realized when his son returned a stump with no arms, legs or eyes (Motte 156). Fear wasn’t only associated with death, some people had trivial fears of not being educated enough for their job, such as Fouquet who was a farmhand before becoming a nurse (Motte 295). In spite of this, fear of death was still the major thing that many soldiers feared. During the Forbidden zone, a man labeled as an apache was dying and was gravely afraid of the sins he had committed throughout his life that he would have to answer for after his death (Borden 73).…
Socrates, is accredited with having said, "Young men fear death; old men fear dying." Young men fear the loss of all they might have accomplished or what might have been. They may fear not having had time to make a name for themselves that would leave their foot print of existence ‘immortal’. Old men, having experienced what life had to offer them, fear the process of dying itself. They fear that their death may be dragged out in some despicable manner. In the modern age, where control and effectiveness are of the greatest virtues, people fear dying alone, in pain and being a burden on others. They fear the kind of dying process that modern medicine is capable of inducing.…
Moreover, death should never be a prevention to a man because no man has true knowledge of what happens after death. Plato and Socrates firmly believe that we have no cause to fear death, and, for the philosopher, death is probably a more desirable state to be in than life because one could reason and contemplate without the distraction of the body. There is no proof or reason to believe that through death, one gains the most knowledge especially if one does not know what happens after death. Philosophers were people who pursued wisdom, and according to Plato, the best way to do this was from the mind alone without the body. "For this fear of death is indeed the pretence of wisdom" (Plato 30). Philosophers did not fear death because they believed that knowledge and wisdom could be gain through death.…
Socrates does not fear the idea of death. He feels that death can be an “unspeakable gain” due to the fact that death could either be nothing or a journey of the soul. Socrates also compares death to a peaceful sleep. Socrates believes that his soul is good and that he has done nothing to deserve for his soul to go to a bad place. In order to live a good life, one should not live fearing death. Imagine living your life everyday thinking about how you are going to die, it would be hard to leave the comfort and safety of your house. Death can also end pain and suffering. Death is an unavoidable part of life. Fearing the inevitable can be a wasteful way to live. Accepting death like Socrates can lead to a more fulfilling…
Epicurus also believed that death was not to be feared. The two writers list four reasons. People do not know what it's like to be dead. Nobody knows the feeling of death; therefore there is no need to fear of death. And we cannot say death is bad. In addition, the writer talks about the relationship between mortal and immortal. It will be boring if a person is mortal and never die. This is called the deprivation of death. If people do not want to live immortal, it is not necessary to fear of death. The third reason is people are worried about dying in a young age. Another possible answer is people are fear of dying in the near future. However, now science and technology are developed. Almost everyone lives healthy nowadays. If a person is health, then he or she does not need to be fear of death. Kagan and Epicurus, explore the thought-provoking part of death. Life after death could be a myth meaning the only important part of human life is when someone is alive. It is then clear of his existence. Could gauge him on his identity and see the effect of his living. As everyone waits for his death, as everyone also experiences the death of other people they become aware of the importance of existence. One’s existence is same as one’s death. The version of understanding both beliefs and values of a person, range from the mentality pursued within the articulation of the same…
Socrates first argument is that death is either “a state of nothingness and utter unconscious, or, as men say there is a change and migration of the soul from this world to another” (pg 17). I definitely agree with his arguments, they make sense. I also think that people are always going to fear death at one point in their life. It is a scary thought that you are never going to live again.…
Death is a necessity to culture and society therefore it is irrational to fear the unenviable and the necessary. Death whether physical or non-physical will always cause change. The change that is caused by death does not always have to be direct but can manifest itself as an indirect change. Throughout time societies have risen and fallen, times changes, nothing is ever going to stay the same. Death is a factor that will impact everyone who is alive as they will meet death. As society’s change and cultures evolve so do the people; to keep change occurring death must ensue for creation to occur. Society’s and cultures depend on death. Death is the drive of progression which drives society’s and cultures to get farther from the unetible death.…
The Gift of Fear," a psychology book by Gavin De Becker, is a great valuable book. It gives significant exhortation about acceptable behavior upon human instinct, how to perceive dangers, and characterizes what genuine trepidation is and its motivation. I find this book to be very interesting. This book gave feeling of comprehension on savagery and trepidation and I feel greatly improved arranged with regards to perceiving perilous circumstances. My favorite part of the book was the warning signs to know when an outsider is a potential risk. This was intriguing to me since I've been told since I was only a young girl to be careful with outsiders. Be that as it may, with every one of these notices about outsiders I had never been advised how to perceive when an outsider was by and large really accommodating and agreeable, or attempting to mischief me in any capacity. I found that some of the warning signs were interesting, for example, a strategy called Forced Teaming.…
Death is treated many different ways in various cultures around the globe. For instance, Buddhists believe that after death a person is reincarnated. In addition, in Mexico they actually celebrate death. El Dia De Los Muertos is a Mexican holiday where people go out and celebrate their loved ones who have died. Mexicans create elaborate alters and cook special food in honor of the dead. The atmosphere is celebratory and jovial. However, in America, death is feared. Most people do not like to talk about death. On the rare occasion that they do talk about death an uncomfortable sensation sets in. Understandably so, death can be scary because of the “unknown” factor. In America, we like to be in control of our lives and our choices. Unfortunately,…
Fear: the mere sight of the word makes some of us cringe. It is a feeling we have all dealt with at one time or another. Fear is the quintessential human emotion. Some people live lives devoid of joy, happiness, and pleasure, but no one escapes the experience of fear and fear’s companion, pain. We are born in fear and pain. Our lives are profoundly shaped by them, as well as our efforts to avoid them.” It is something that we first experience as children, and are conditioned to respond to in many different ways. Some of us live in constant fear; of accidents, of bad people doing us harm, or of physical ailments. Others simply take things as they come in life, whether they are good or bad things. In the dictionary, fear is defined as: "a feeling of agitation or anxiety caused by the presence or imminence of danger. That is a rather ominous definition. Fear can also refer to general anxiety, as in "fear of speaking in public or "fear of open areas . These fears arise not necessarily from a present or imminent threat, but rather a perceived threat, which to some can be just as scary. For most people fear is an unpleasant feeling and it is…
One of my greatest fears, even more than the certainty of death, is knowing I'm going to die before I do. This is a fear many people have, but they, like me, push the heart-slowing thought out of their heads.…
Throughout Soren Kierkegaard’s Fear and Trembling he describes two types of people. The first is a knight of faith and the second is a knight of infinite resignation. While a knight of faith grabs hold of the impossible and clings to it, believing that it will be fulfilled, a knight of infinite resignation realizes that the goal is impossible and resigns to it. However, despite this acquiescence a knight of infinite resignation builds the meaning of his life around that goal while simultaneously realizing that he will never obtain it. While Abraham encompasses the qualities of a knight of faith, Socrates exhibits more traits that would characterize him as a knight of infinite resignation. Socrates’ idea…
