ARMED AND DANGEROUS
A female takes on the role of police officer in a male dominated profession in Armed and Dangerous. Gina Gallo was a Chicago police woman for sixteen years and found herself surrounded by the constant reminder that police work was a man’s job. In addition to the things she would see and experience on the rough streets of Chicago, she also dealt with stereotypes and discrimination that came with being a female police officer. A police officer is trained and groomed to deal with any situation they come across on the street. They are experts when it comes to keeping the public safe and enforcing the law. However, when some of the issues they come across collide with their personal feelings, no amount of training or preparation can always show you how to react to such events. "To best serve each neighborhood, the Police Department must be aware of the cultural differences of the city's diverse population, and adjust policing techniques accordingly. The diversity of the population means that working in any particular district will be different than another." This statement sums up the entire book as there is no template for any given situation because the ingredients are always different. Police Officer Gina Gallo realizes this early on in her police career. Her journey began in the police academy which made her painfully aware of how fellow officers do not think much of females on the police force. Even though it was the early 1980s, there was still much ground to be uncovered in viewing women as equals. While trying to be recognized for ability, it was often clouded with the nagging belief that women were still viewed as objects. Being a daughter of a police officer, Gina Gallo saw the honor in service, but soon became aware of the inner politics and the different rules for women.
Every new officer that comes out of the police academy is looked down upon by the
