History/Background/Origin: What is yoga? “The word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word “Yuj” meaning to yoke, join or unite” (Body Poetry Fitness Studio [BPFS], n.d., para. 1). Yoga aims to achieve a balanced life, by incorporating mind, body and spirit through techniques and practices. Yoga is not a religion, but a philosophy that can be incorporated within any belief system. “Some of the most well-known modern schools of yoga include: Iyengar, Astanga, Ananda, Anusara, Bikram, Kripalu, Kundalini and Sivananda” (BPFS, n.d., para. 2), which has been practiced for over 5,000 years (“American Yoga Association,” n.d., para. 1). Aromatherapy is the treatment or prevention of disease by use of essential oils. Therapeutic Grade essential oils stimulate nerves in the nose that send impulses to the limbic system, where memories, instincts, and vital functions are controlled and processed. The limbic system also regulates main bodily functions, such as digestion, respiration, cardiovascular activity, and stress levels (BPFS, n.d., para. 1). Guidelines/Etiquette
- There are to be no shoes on the gym floor. Please leave them on the bleachers or rug.
- Please leave negative energy at the door. The atmosphere in the Yoga studio should be one of tranquility.
- Please limit social chatter. Yoga class is a time to move inward, explore sensations and connect at a deeper level. Be conscious of your neighbor on the next mat.
- Cell phones are to be turned off.
- Wear comfortable clothes that do not bind at the waist or knees when you sit down. The practice is done in bare feet.
- Refrain from chewing gum during class
- If you have special physical issues, please consult the instructor before class, and take care of yourself during class.
- Yoga should be steady and enjoyable. There should be effort but no struggle to maintain the pose. Be sure to relax your mind. Keep your smile on your face. Keep your gaze soft. Keep the effort in your body and keep your attention present.
