Art Analysis: The Lamentation By Giotto Di Bondone
The artwork I selected was The Lamentation, Figure 8.1 painted by Giotto di Bondone in 1305 in Italy. The artworks style is naturalism. Naturalism is the practice of painting things exactly as they are, the emphasis being on authenticity. The artist placed importance on the quality of “realness” in art. He observed humans and reproduced their gestures, expressions and movement in art (artble) The subjects in the painting are the followers of Christ surrounding his body after his death. Mary Magdalene is shown at Christ’s feet and Christ lies in his mother’s lap. (saylor) The subjects are in active, natural poses: leaning, holding, sitting and bending. In the Lamentation of the Christ, the downward-left diagonal line of the mountain in the background draws the eye to Mary holding her dead son, while John the Baptist throws his arms up and back in despair. The upward motion leads the eye to the sky above the lamenters, where angels are weeping for the death of Christ. (Wikipedia) Di Bondone used authentic colors in his paintings. He also used bold greens, yellows, oranges and reds. He used light and shade to draw attention to the curves, muscles and bodylines of his subjects. (artble) The colors the artist uses are pastel and are complementary in nature. This creates a sense of movement within the pictorial plane. The textures of the clothing appear soft, and smooth against the contrasting rough bumpy rock surfaces surrounding them (artmuseums) The size of the painting is 7’ 7” X 7’ 9”. The religious symbols in the artwork are the halos, the winged angels, the mother of Jesus and Jesus, himself. The overall theme of the painting is that of grief and tragedy being depicted by the death of Christ. I think we as students in 2017 should view this art.
