This written piece examines the SOCO Paris, leather, over-the-shoulder bucket bag. I first encountered this object on display in a charity shop in Belfast. This bag, now worn and slowly decaying, attracted me with the fact that there is a story behind it that lasts years and years. I believe that one day, it served somebody well until they decided that it had begun to look too worn out. The vintage looking bag now has more appeal and meaning to me as a worn bag with cracked leather, than I think it would have had if it were brand new. The object is explored here in relation to meaning and consumption.
Firstly, the colours of the bag are earthy tones of brown and camel. This shows that the bag must have been produced as part of an autumn-winter collection. In addition, there are areas of hand embroidery and printed material (on the inside of the bag) of ‘leaf’ patterns. The smell of the bag is the same smell you get from old clothes and old leather. Surprisingly, after I bought it, I discovered a handful of old sugar cubes in the bottom of the bag. This added on to the personality of the bag as it proved that there is a story that goes with the bag as both the inside and outside of the bag were found to be a bit peculiar. In order for someone to throw away such a bag, it means that there is no longer a need for the bag’s memories or appearance- perhaps the original owner has had a lifestyle change. (Woodward, 2007:
