Being a student of an art class, going to a art museum is the only way to experience a whole complete work of art. By oberserving a painting or any sculpture in a book , the viewer cannot experience the whole idea of the work of art. Wassilly Kandinsky’s painting the study of “ Circles in the circle” contains, subject matter, visual elements, iconography, and medium. First of all, the painting of the Circles in the circle was painted in 1923 by the artist Wassilly Kandinsky. This artwork can be found in Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The subject matter of this painting would be in the focus of the circles. The artist has chosen to draw many circles in different sizes. By analyzing the painting in person, the viewer can observe that the painting is made by watercolors and ink on paper. This painting is showing certain colors and shapes signifying emotions that can be arrange and combined into a whole. Which is reflecting the harmony of the cosmos. Wassilly Kandinsky says, “Every work of art is the child of its age and, in many cases, the mother of our emotions”(Citation). In other words, art work is made out of our inner emotions. Second of all, the painting of the “Circles in the circle” shows a varitey of visual elements.
Visual elements are the visual components of color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value ( Definition from the internet). The visual elements that are shown in the painting are: shapes, line quality, color, rhythm, and radial balance. By viewing this painting the viewer can see what kind of shapes are being display which are circles. In this art work, a thick black circle is surrounding twenty-six overlapping circles of different sizes and colors.The majority of the circles intersected by black straight lines. In the painting it shows two strobes of blue and yellow expanding from the top corners cross toward the center of the piece, causing the colors of the circles to change because of the overlapping. The colors that being shown in this painting contains primary , secondary, warm, and cool colors. Looking at the image closely the viewer can see that there is a rhythm of circles in the art piece making a radial balance. The outer black circle in the painting is like a second frame for a picture that encourages the viewer to look at it closely and focus on the interaction between the inside circles, and the two crossing diagonal stripes to improve the effect and adding a perspective to the
composition. Thirdly, the iconography of this painting would be the circle, the most elementary of forms, had symbolic, and cosmic significance. Bascially, the circle is the synthesis of the greatest oppositions. It combines the concentric and the excentric in a single form, and in balance.
