The aim of this study is to review an article by Chambers (2012) which focuses in issues to do with rise of divorce rates and how children are affected. The article also covers about other issue such as media in the family homes and the effect this is having on the relationships of parents and their children nowadays. It also looks at other issues such as consumption and class and the impact it has on the children in modern society. The review will also look at the strengths and weaknesses of the article.
The main issues that are raised by Chambers (2012) in the article are firstly, the fact that the rise in divorce in modern society is bringing up the rise in single parenting which potentially put children in difficulty situations. Another issue picked up from the article is the introduction of media in homes. Media in homes is said to be bringing upon tensions between the parents and their children’s relationships. The increase demand of commercialized goods targeting children is also another issue and how it has resulted in children of today being more materialistic than ever before.
Growth of divorce in modern society has resulted in the expansion of single parenting families. When parents go through a divorce this does not only affect them but also affects the children involved. Children might tend to think they are to blame for the divorce and therefore resulting in feelings of negativity as stated by (Richards, 1999). Following divorce, change is expected. The single parent family might be forced to relocate to an area where they can afford, might be at risk of poverty, change schools and this results in distress to the children. This can also have a negative impact on their education, health and also on their social life. Parents involved might not be at a stage where they can collaborate and put aside their differences which results in one of the parent distancing themselves.
