Definition of the Arts:
Google definition: The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.
My definition of the arts is that it is a medium for which emotion and expression can be conveyed, typically displayed in the form of a physical representation. For example, a sculpture or a drawing, which has the ability to reflect what the artist is feeling and is portrayed physically. There are two types of views towards the arts: Objective and Subjective. The objective view looks at the arts based on criteria and the quality of the artwork …show more content…
It connotes that art is merely a representation of what the artist thinks, as it cannot represent reality, it can only ever reflect the point of view of the artist because art is not the truth. For example, the image of the pipe may look like a pipe, but below it states that it is not a pipe in French. This is because it is an image rather than an actual pipe, where to claim it as pipe would be a lie as it is a representation. However, Picasso also states that the “truth” can be revealed from this lie to create an understanding. Although everyone knows a different truth, art can be subjective. In this quote Picasso suggests that the art reveals the artists truth. Art resonates with the viewer and tends to have a deeper meaning and message. The pipe represents a pipe that is true, however, the drawing is not a pipe. Hence, the lie of the art to express a truth is seen in this image of the pipe. Overall, Picasso means that the art itself is a lie, but the meaning behind it conveys something from reality hence the idea of the pipe painting not actually being a pipe, but a representation of what a pipe is. This is what I feel that Picasso means where he says “lie” because it is not really anything, it is merely an interpretation of something expressed in order to show another thing hence the use of the word “truth” after …show more content…
This famous picture is an expressionistic construction based on an actual experience of a scream whilst Edvard Munch was on a walk, after his two companions-seen in the background-had left him. Fitting the fact that the sound must have been heard at the time when his mind was in an abnormal state. Edvard Munch makes it in a style, which if pushed to extremes can destroy human integrity.
The truth behind the painting is that Munch looked to express internal emotions through external forms and thereby provide a visual image for a universal human experience. Hence the truth behind this depicts a genderless person, perhaps the artist- Edvard Munch himself- screaming or in a state of worry about something. There are three aspects to this particular painting that include: The bridge with two other people at the back, the main figure that is screaming and the background of the image. Although the painting expresses someone screaming, it is merely representative of something else hence the lie aspect of this painting. However, the painting reflects the emotion that the painter felt during a particular moment hence the truth behind the representation. Munch also stated in a notebook entry on subjective vision written in 1889, “It is not the chair which is to be painted but what the human being has felt in relation to it.” This is what I feel that Munch has reflected in
