Being said that, the S..W must be able to interview and to communicate effectively with Ashley who is already capable to anticipate the bad consequences for her mum in case that the information that had been disclosed will be shared. We don't know if Ashley discussed her concerns with her mum or other family members, so she needs to be approached sensitively , as she might feel ashamed, fearful or reluctant. The ability of the S.W to respond to Ashley's emotional needs , to communicate effectively and to build a trusting relationship at a crisis point is a core component for the profession itself. It is crucial for the S.W to understand that the strongest feelings can be regulated and handled through strong relationships building. (Sameroff and Emde, 1989). Knowledge drawn from attachment (Bowlby,1997) and development theories or empirical studies , plays a significant role in understanding and mediating the dramatic effects of neglect and abuse. Howe (2005), outlines that ‘If relationships are where things developmental can go wrong, then relationships are where they are most likely to be put right.
Ashley would need a healthy network of relationships to buffer the distress and the pain. She is currently withdrawn, her attendance at school is poor, and she does not engage meaningfully with the educational environment like she had used to do six months ago.
