Has your opinion changed? Why or why not?
What have you learned or discovered this week that may have changed what you feel is important to the issues of the Asian American society and culture?
How can Theatre/TV and Film better serve the Asian American public and those issues that we see are being wrestled with?
My opinion about Asian American portrayals in theater and film has changed, since I previously have thought that Asian Americans have not been given main roles in theater.
I also thought that if they were given roles in theater, then they were given mostly stereotypical Asian roles. Based on what I have read, there is an interesting fusion going on with Asian American actors and actresses getting main roles that whites have usually been given. Asian Americans are seen on a personal level, rather than a cultural level. Asians throughout different countries in Asia are also coming together and breaking their cultural barriers in theater. Theater and film can better serve the Asian American public, in portraying more Asian American characters in other less stereotypical Asian roles. In essence, the more Asian Americans are portrayed in American plays, the more possibilities there are to expand and create brilliant plays. Theater companies are only limiting themselves, when they exclude certain cultures out of main roles, rather than breaking past the stereotypical roles that Asian Americans play in. As a result, playwrights may run out of ideas when creating new plays, since they will always base characters on the same ideas. If we can move past these barriers, then I think more plays will take on deeper emotional meanings, since personal characteristics of actors and actresses will be more emphasized. Another idea to promote Asian Americans in theater, is to come up with inspirational plays about life. This will make the plays more interesting to watch, and can make the audience focus more on the themes of plays, rather than the stereotypical characters in plays.
