Asian Mother: Push, honey, push.
Narrator: Mary pushed and screamed and pushed. Asian mother: Before you push, take a deep breath and then push.
Narrator: Mary took a deep breath and pushed as hard as she could. Finally, the baby was born healthy and alive. Joseph used the scissors to cut the umbilical cord. Mary: Thank you for the present. The First Wise Man: You are welcome. Narrator: The second wise man knocked on the door. Joseph wondered who it was at the door so he opened it. The Second Wise Man: Howdy. How are you all? I saw a gigantic star and wondered what the star was shining so bright for. Now I see a baby has been born. What is his name? Mary: His name is Jesus. “She had all the plumpness of a baby; dimpled knees and folds around the wrists; pale baby skin,” (302). The narrator indicates that the baby skin was pale. From the context clues, the reader could imply that the baby could be lifeless or suffering from the strain of death. However the narrator brings the attention to the reader that the baby had survived. She quotes, “she had survived.” This presents the reader with the evidence that the baby is no longer alive and it is in fact dead. The word had shows the reader that the baby was alive at a point in time, but in that instant the baby is dead. Karen Brennan shows how death plays a role in the story. She manipulates the sentence debating a sense of hope for the life of the baby, but then she abruptly changes the tone of the story using descriptive passages of the baby taking away any previous hope that the child lived. The death of the baby was so traumatic that even the narrator could not shake the restraint of disparity, being forced to remember the baby as the time progresses. In addition, the death of the baby could stimulate on the husband’s negative attitude towards his wife, “I wish I had the nerve to go outside, I tell him. He grunts as if nothing was out of the ordinary,” (303). The narrator draws a picture of the…

This allows Anna to develop more confidence in her knowledge and become a stronger, more assertive woman. When Elinor calls for Anna's help to deliver Mary Daniel's child, she is at first hesitant to assist because her own mother died during childbirth when she was just four years old. Elinor insists, however, telling Anna that "You know a very great deal more than you think you do" and eventually, Anna gives in and prepares to deliver the baby, recalling memories from her own first confinement to help her. Anna tries not to think about the fact that she is about to "invade the body of a living woman", however she quickly overcomes this thought, and tries to "...quiet that part of my mind hammering away about modesty and violation." Although she is unsure of what she is doing, she acts as though she does, as she thinks it important that Mary sees her acting confidently. Once her hands were inside of Mary, however, it seemed as though her flesh "felt as familiar" to her as her own and Anna has little difficulty in helping her deliver the baby. Afterwards, they laughed and "for an hour, in that season of death," they celebrated a life. This particular event sees Anna developing a part of her that is confident and sure of her own knowledge and skills. Due to her experiences in birthing livestock, Anna is already equipped with the skills necessary to assist in childbirth but there exists a different part of her inside that is naturally gifted in midwifery and it is this part that truly allows her to shine and take control of what she can do thus leading her to discover her natural confidence and…
