context. The changes from one situation to another are stark, and hard to notice unless you’re paying close attention to detail. The following examples all show how vastly different people can speak from one situation to the next. Work speech is a unique use of words that allows people to communicate with others with the same expertise or knowledge.
Work speech uses specialized terms and metaphors to convey their messages across. This can prevent to people without expertise in an area from understanding a particular part of a conversation. For example, restaurants, different sports, video games, and all sorts of subjects have varying degrees of work speech. As an example, this is a conversation that I had watching the Rangers game earlier this week.
Me: If we sweep the Astros were in 1st place
Chris: I know, and the Twins are right behind us. The Astros might not even get the 2nd Wild Card Spot.
Me: I just hope we don’t play the Blue Jays in the 1st round, they crush lefties, and our rotation is full of them.
(Delino DeShields hits a blooper to center)
Me: Fall, Fall, Fall This is an example of work speech because it is possible that a person might not know what many of these words mean. My roommate, who is from England, had no idea what we were talking about. He did not know what a sweep (win every game in the series) Wild Card Spot (for good teams that don’t win their divisions) any of the teams locations (Minnesota Twins, Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, Texas Rangers) rotation ( the order in which the pitchers pitch) or that the team that score was based off the number of run scored instead of whoever won the inning. The best though was that he thought I was rooting for the centerfield to …show more content…
fall down. This misunderstanding was caused through the terms that are either specific to baseball or to American sports in general. Another example of work speech is the conversations that my dad has with other ranchers about cattle.
They use words like heifer and steer are used in their discussions, but these words are unknown to most outside of the cattle industry. I also find it interesting that lots of people don’t know of or have never seen barbed wire, cattle guards, or pumpjacks. The jargon used by my dad and others in the cattle industry is not understood by most, and is a perfect example of work speech. A person working in a big city or a location where cattle and ranches are less present are some of the people who would not understand these
words. The next speech context is about how you talk to people of different statuses. For instance, I would call one of my friends by their first name, but I wouldn’t call a professor or a person with a higher status than me with their first name. I would add Mr. or Mrs. before their last names to show more respect. It can also changed based on the setting as well. A person may know another person very well, but in a formal setting might be forced to doctor or another more formal title. an example of this is when I had a teacher in high school that wanted us to call him by his first name, but when another teacher or principal was around we would automatically switch to Mr. Smith. The automatic presence of another adult made it an immediate change of setting and language. The moment that one of these other adults that we weren’t as familiar with the setting changed and our language changed without being requested to do so. Another example of how different statuses affect a person speech is how you introduce yourself. In an informal setting you probably say their name
“ This is Bob Jones”
In a more formal setting a person would probably add a title if they have one.
“This is Dr. Bob Jones
The more formal situation requires the difference in speech due to the context of the situation. the ability for people to completely change how they talk to people based on the status of a person is amazing. The last type of speech that I’m going to discuss is speech dominance. This occurs when another person tries to overpower another person with words. This can be found on Twitter and Facebook in the battle that goes on there. Twitter Battles are attempts to be assertive and get dominance over another person. An example is the only twitter war that I have ever participated in. It occurs a couple of years ago when Nolan Ryan left the Texas Rangers in a power struggle with Rangers GM Jon Daniels. Bob: “Nolan Ryan was the face of the Rangers” JD ambition has cursed the Rangers from any good decisions in the future. Me: Jon Daniels is one who makes all of the trades and signed all the prospects that allowed the Rangers to win. Bob: The Rangers didn’t win until Nolan Ryan was president. Me: JD was the one who built the team not Ryan Bob: lots of bad words about Jon Daniels. This twitter battle is an example of speech dominance because each of us attempted to dominant the other with our opinions. The “lots of bad words” phrase is the part that attempts to be the most dominant words. The battle lasted longer than those quotes, but I didn’t have much of a response after all of the swearing. Another Example is in a podcast, that is about random stuff, I heard where a woman on the podcast was ignored and the three men on the podcast kept on talking about their own conversations. They were talking about what it would be like to have three legs, and if would be like a three legged race. The woman in the podcast asked them about having three hands instead. They immediately ignored her and continued on with the leg conversation. They did not even recognize that she said anything, and she never brought it up again the rest of the podcast. This example shows that men can use speech dominance to completely ignore what another person is saying. This can happen all the time as women can be more passive or ask things as a question. Whether men do this knowingly or biologically is another question. The different settings and contexts that a person has can dictate how he or she speak. They’re other examples and other ways that speech is affected by the context of the situation, and some of them are probably more important. Its also amazing how the human brain can figure out the context without anyone realizing whats going. Being able to transfer to informal talk to formal in a blink of the eye is something that is truly astonishing.
