P3 Explain factors that may influences communication and interpersonal interaction in a Health and Social Care Environment
Environmental Factors
Noise – If you are working in a nursery and there are a lot of background noises, it will be difficult to hear what the children are saying when they need your help. For example, in the nursery there is a child who is using hearing aids and this will amplify background noises as well as the sound of the speaker. Therefore, a noisy environment may be difficult and unpleasant for the child who is using a hearing aid.
Lighting – During a doctor surgery, if the lighting is poor it will be difficult for you to make sense of the patient’s facial expressions as you can’t see their faces properly. If you adjust the light properly it will also help those patients who support their understanding of speech by lip reading or those who have difficulty with their sight.
Positioning – If you are a doctor who is informing the patient about their health, you should lean a little bit forward and making eye contact with the patient. This is to show them that you are giving them attention and listening to them. However, if you lean too close to the patient, you will be in their personal space which makes them feel uncomfortable. If you sit too far from them this mean you doesn’t care or doesn’t want to treat them. Also, if you star at the patient this may make them feel intimidated.

For example, people may use jargon, dialect or slang to communicate effectively with people in their own speech community. These differences can create barriers for those who cannot understand slang.
