Bill's Football: A Short Story
Bill is a stunning multi sport athlete who has a devotion to baseball. He loves being outside and doing anything as long as he’s active. When he is on the baseball field he can play almost any position that he wants, unless the older boys had their spots locked for the game. Other than that Bill loved being on the field and feeling the hot summer days on his skin and the sweat trickling down his face. But most of all he loves the delightful smell of popcorn at the concession stand and the defined smell of freshly cut grass below his feet. He also enjoys the sound of the crowd yelling and cheering for his team and most importantly, for him. Bill was born to a not so wealthy family, which in turn made him really work for what he wanted. By the time that Bill had hit high school he had already had much respect for who he was from almost all of his past coaches.
It is 17th of October and today is the day Bill has his last home baseball game of the season.
“Bill, come over here,” Bill’s coach shouted.
“Yes, coach?” Bill said. “I noticed how anxious you seem after watching your warm

The home fans are ecstatic. They’re screaming for Bill to strike out the last batter to sell them the win. This is it, this last pitch will determine what the outcome will be! Bill gets in his stance. He starts to throw, and the ball is released. For a brief moment the whole stadium was quiet. CRACK! The sound of the bat had filled everyone’s ears and everyone’s eyes had followed the the white sphere that flew through the air. The ball had hit the ground with a thud. Then that was when the opposite team had started to cheer. It was a homerun. All the players on Bill’s team had put their heads down in disbelief, they had just lost the game 6-5 to a home run at the end of the game. After Bill and his teammates had cleaned the field after the game they had started to regain their spirit and decided to go out to eat as a team to celebrate a hard fought

This book begins with the woes that Roy Hobbs experiences while a member of the Chicago Cubs, and coincidentally, the 2016 World Series just provided the first world victory for the Cubs since 1908. As I watched some of the games a few weeks ago, I could not help but wonder about the extreme highs and the destructive lows which a professional athlete must…

Author Bruce Watson’s (2014) “How Theodore Roosevelt Saved Football” discussed how Theodore Roosevelt protected football from endangerment. Theodore Roosevelt had a great passion for football, however; the sport was considered treacherous. Many of the players received concussions, brain impairment, back injuries, and even death. During the early 1900’s football faced a lot of controversy claiming the football players would injure and potentially kill other players “to put them out of business” (Watson, 2014, Roosevelt Saved Football). When Theodore Roosevelt’s son, Theodore Roosevelt Jr., who was a member of the freshman team at Harvard, was injured with a black eye, broken arm and knocked unconscious he made major headlines (Watson, 2014,…

Liberty Jean Weston was still in her uniform when she arrived at the football team's practise session that Friday afternoon. Cheerleading drills had wound down early, and she had made her way directly to the football field instead of the changing rooms. She needed to catch Curt before he hit the locker room himself, need here being more representative of the strength of her motivation than of any actual necessity. She had his phone number and knew where he lived; what she lacked was patience. She often claimed to need instead of want, and was not used to taking no for answer. She came from an affluent family raised by a weak-willed father and a mother whose ambition was often misguided by pride. Her sense of altruism wasn't lacking, per se, but it was well buried beneath the twin dogs of haughtiness and entitlement.…

“GET HOME!!! GET HOME!!!” Those were the words my dad would yell from the third base coach’s box as I passed him rounding third! Baseball to me is more than just a game! Baseball is a passion, fueled by the desire to succeed, the passion to overcome, and the dedication to be great. A baseball field to me is like a stage is to a dancer or an open road for a biker; I just love every aspect of this amazing sport. It’s the field with its seemingly unfair depth, its soft green grass and the infamous red dirt, that make me have the passion for the game like my father did as a child. My life seemed to be limitless when I was in between that fence. Taking cuts on the tee, putting together a pickup game that didn’t matter who won or lost, or even on those days that practice seemed to never end, I still had the love for the game.…

    Electoral College

The founding fathers established it in the Constitution as a compromise between election of the President by a vote in Congress and election of the President by a popular vote of qualified citizens. The Electoral College process consists of the selection of the electors, the meeting of the electors where they vote for President and Vice President, and the counting of the electoral votes by Congress. The Electoral College consists of 538 electors. A majority of 270 electoral votes is required to elect the President. Your state’s entitled allotment of electors equals the number of members in its Congressional delegation: one for each member in the House of Representatives plus two for your Senators. There have been four presidents to win the presidency without actually winning the popular vote of the nation. The most recent incident of this was the 2000 election of President George W. Bush, and this sparked a new interest in changing the system. There are two states, Nebraska and Maine that currently use their electoral votes a little differently than the other 48 states. They allot two electoral votes to the statewide winner and the rest according to the winner in each congressional district. This is one change to the system that is currently being presented by legislators in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Another possible change is the “Agreement Among the States to Elect the President by National Popular Vote”, or the NPV compact. It would require electors to vote for the candidate who wins the most votes nationwide. An issue with this change is that the president would most likely be elected from votes of more populated areas like big cities that have similar beliefs and the smaller states and rural areas voices’ would be lost due to them being so spread out. One major concern for the NPV compact is that it could lead to corruption of the voting process by candidates being blackmailed with the threat of losing votes if the blackmailer’s demands weren’t met. Also…

“Let’s go Brain! Let’s go!” was shouted repeatedly by Brian's drunk friends as they jeered him for not offering his seat to one of the ladies that were standing in the packed #4 subway train. He eventually yielded, I guess to peer pressure and adopted a gentlemanlike behaviour. His friends broke out in celebrations at his newfound nobility while the passengers in the train car erupted in laughter at the series of events. I flashed a smile while holding my four-year-old daughter, who was sleeping. That’s how my night ended as I boarded the train and left “The House That Jeter Built” (Not Babe Ruth): The (New) Yankees Stadium. How the night transpired prior was quite something…
