Research on interviews has generally shown that standardized procedures are higher in their reliability and validity than unstructured interviews. Learning how structured interviews are constructed is an important component of the selection process, as is getting a “feel” for what it’s like to give and receive an interview. This case gives you an opportunity to do both.…

One strength of using participant observation to investigate the idea that ethnic minorities are treated differently within the education system is that it allows the researcher to join in. They will be placed in the same situation that teachers find themselves in routinely, which will allow them to see things through the teachers eyes. This means that the researcher will be able to see things from the same perspective as teachers. This would allow the researcher to create a close bond with the teacher/s and this would mean that they would be more likely to confide. This is particularly important as this is a sensitive subject area. Teachers may only show their true feelings, opinions and behaviours if they feel they can trust the researcher. However this can also be a weakness. As the researcher becomes drawn into seeing things from a teachers perspective they may become blind to insights that would otherwise become available. This would result in the research being biased.…
To comprehend sociological approach we must understand social problems and our approach to social problems as a society. A social problem is a social condition or pattern of behavior which has negative consequences for individuals, our social world or our physical world. Social imagination factors into our concept of sociological understanding and integrates our personal life with our social experiences. Overall society struggles with personal troubles and public issues, and how we can resolve or create a resolution to the problems by keeping our values and beliefs intact. There are many problems that some sociologist find when using postal questionnaires. Postal questionnaires are sent to homes and business in certain areas, postal questionnaire mainly use closed questions as positives use this method due to the fact, that they are able to interpret the data in to numerical form such as graphs. Positives use quantitative data because they believed that society is molded by social factors and therefore can be measured using the same method as the natural science.…
A final advantage is that unstructured interviews can be flexible, in which the researcher has no set questions and as the interview progresses more questions are answered. This is an advantage because the interview will…

Unstructured interviews have advantages and disadvantages and as a qualitative method they are expressed through words and relay people’s thoughts, feelings and motivations. Unstructured interviews are interviews that don’t have certain questions meaning it’s more free and relaxed. They give us a deep understanding of the interviewees world because we can use the answers they give to shape our questions so that they are appropriate and relevant. However, using unstructured interviews can also cause problems, for example they take a long time to conduct. When looking at the advantages and disadvantages we need to look at how this effects what we are trying to research ‘boys underachievement at school’ as this will affect whether the advantages and limitations are relevant to the study.…
Sociologists use different types of questionnaires in their research, these ranging close ended questions and open ended questions. Close ended gives the respondent a guide upon what there answer should be and directs them to a certain decision it tends to take more control of the answer, whereas open ended questions give the respondent more free choice and arguably this seems more ethical.…

Positivist sociologists like this as they see the structured interview as having the advantage of creating data which is high in reliability. To elaborate on this point, a Positivist would say that this is beneficial because generalisations can then be made from collections of the interviews. Pre-coded questions (with fixed response categories) also make it simpler to analyse the data, which then makes creating generalisations easier. Patterns and trends can be identified from this data, which means that cause-and-effect relationships can then also be suggested. For instance, when interviewing ex- offenders about their views of the police, the researcher will have pre-coded the questions; an example of this could be good experiences, bad experiences, middle of the road experiences, with another set of possible answers to fit the ‘other’ category. By having pre-coded questions, it means the data is easily quantifiable, taking less time and costing less as mentioned before. However with closed- ended questions the…
Andre Ebbinkhuysen is the subject of my culture interview. I chose him because I was interested in learning more about the South African culture and its history. We met at McDonalds on South College Road on Friday, June 10th at 11:00 am and interviewed for about an hour. I felt very comfortable interviewing him, as we share a secondary group at Cape Fear Community College, sitting right next to each other in our Sociology class. I feel I know him better than a stranger I would have tried to approach for this interview.…
