This assignment allows students to apply these determinants to a chosen topic of interest, and relate this information to nursing practice.

Using Marmot and Wilkinson's (2003) social determinants of health framework, identify three or four determinants that contribute to your chosen topic. Explain how each of these determinants contributes to the complexity of your topic.
Explain why it is important for nurses to understand and use the information that you have discussed. Structure of the assignment
The assignment needs an introduction, body and conclusion and needs to be written with clear paragraphs. Your discussion must be supported by evidence and be referenced according to the
FNMH Course Manual. Below is a suggested way of structuring your assignment:
Introduction: Outline the chosen topic, identify why it has been chosen and state its current effect on health in Australia.

Food insecurity is a social determinant of health that is becoming more prevalent in Canadian society. Food security is an important aspect of public health in which there is growing evidence between the association of food insecurity and poorer health outcomes. According to Raphael (2009), food insecurity can be defined as “the inability to acquire or consume an adequate diet quality or sufficient quantity of food in socially acceptable ways, or the uncertainty that one will be able to do so” (p. 188). One would not think that in a higher income country such as Canada that food insecurity would even be a public health concern, but according to Health Canada (2012) 7.2% of Canadian households were food insecure between the years 2007 and 2008. In addition, food insecurity was positively correlated with lower income households. According to Health Canada (2012) 55.5% of food insecure households main source of income was from social assistance.…

Good health follows a social gradient and typically flows in the positive direction with increasing socioeconomic status; The importance of the social (as opposed to biological or genetic) causes of this increase for example, housing quality, access to healthcare or quality of work, has also been established. This has led to increasing pressure in research, practice and policy-making environments to investigate these wider social determinants of health, through the implementation of appropriate interventions, and thereby reducing the gradient and health…

Due to the enormous growth of the health care industry itself and the many changes of how information is delivered, it is more important now than ever that nurses have acquired information literacy. “Information Literacy is defined as the ability to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information” (Cherry & Jacob, 2011, p. 306). Nurses need the ability to recognize when information is needed because they need to know what questions they need to ask their patients to be able to clearly assess their patient’s conditions. They also need to assess outside information to be able to establish the best evidence based practice to be used in their patient’s treatment. Information can be obtained from the patient themselves or evidence based practice journals, computer data bases, and facility protocols. “To be able to achieve any of these competencies nurses need to identify where relevant information can be found” (Glasper, 2011, p. 188). It is also very important to consider the level of evidence of your source of information. Once the nurse has gathered information, one must be able to understand what the information means. Anyone can read the words on a lab report, but nurses must be able to know what lab values mean. They must also be able to know when values…

For this paper I am interviewing my friend's mother who lives down the street from me. Her name is Kimberly Addison and she is a registered nurse in the State Of California, who acquired her registered nursing license August 31st 1987. She has experience as a hospice nurse, Charge nurse, trauma nurse, Head nurse of the ER and Director of Nursing. One of the first questions I asked Mrs. Addison was that if I wanted to take up nursing what should I do and what are the primary requirements. She responded by saying, “perspective nurses should complete a diploma program or an associate, bachelor's degree program in nursing. She told me all nursing programs require students to take courses in anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology, psychology and social behavioral science”. When you have completed completion of state approved training programs and the passed the national Council licensure examination for register nurses you will be recognized in the medical community as an entry-level registered nurse. She also mentioned when you first start out you will be evaluating and implementing care also administering medication according to the orders by the doctor. She also mentioned that when she was training as a nurse’s aide her nurse that was training her taught her that assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation are the core principles then you will carry with you no matter what type of care you provide as a nurse or a physician.…
