Objective(s): Learning Objectives: 1, 5, 6, 7, 8
Graduate Ability: 1.2, 1.4, 1.5, 2.2, 3.3, 4.3
ANMC Competency: 2, 6
Weight: 40%
Due: 29 April
Length: 1000-1500 words
Task: 1500 word (maximum) paper exploring a major contemporary issue that has an effect on the population in Australia.
Marmot and Wilkinson (2003) encourage us to think about health issues from a very wide and socially focussed perspective, and have written about 10 social determinants of health. This assignment allows students to apply these determinants to a chosen topic of interest, and relate this information to nursing practice.
Instructions:
Choose one of the three contemporary topics identified below:
• Childhood obesity
• Homelessness
• Dementia
Using Marmot and Wilkinson's (2003) social determinants of health framework, identify three or four determinants that contribute to your chosen topic. Explain how each of these determinants contributes to the complexity of your topic.
Explain why it is important for nurses to understand and use the information that you have discussed. Structure of the assignment
The assignment needs an introduction, body and conclusion and needs to be written with clear paragraphs. Your discussion must be supported by evidence and be referenced according to the
FNMH Course Manual. Below is a suggested way of structuring your assignment:
Introduction: Outline the chosen topic, identify why it has been chosen and state its current effect on health in Australia.
Body: Use this section to discuss the topic and demonstrate your thinking about the issue.
Identify the 3 or 4 major social factors that have a clear relationship to your chosen issue and explain the nature of those relationships. Link this information with the Social Determinants of
Health, as identified by Wilkinson and Marmot (2003). Describe how nurses could use this information to inform their practice.
