Athenians vs Melians
1. The Athenians want the Melians to join them. They say that the Melians should join a world power such as themselves. Athens needs more power incase rival countries such as Sparta tries to conquer them. Athens says that they are being nice to the Melians and offering for them to join rather than destroying their country. They say that the only way they can trust the Melians is if they join Athens, because an Island like them is likely to rebel. Athens responds to the Melians belief in the gods by saying that they should fully trust the gods. Athenians also say that the Spartans won’t help the Melians out of sympathy.
2. The Melians do not trust Athens. They say that their military is too powerful for them to trust. They say that it is best for them not to get involved with Athens for the sake of the countries safety. They think that Athens is making it too obvious that they want to destroy the Melians since Athens is risking their safety to try and unite with the Melians. The Melians want to trust the gods instead of trust Athens. They believe that the gods will help them and if anything goes bad, Sparta, out of sympathy, will help them.
3. The Melians should first consult with Sparta, asking if they would ally up with them. If Sparta says yes, then they would be clear to unite with Athens. If anything goas bad, they can just call Sparta and Sparta will come and destroy Athens. It is better for a small country like the Melians to have a backup.
