They were divided into classes. At the top were aristocrats. Aristocrats had large estates and made up the cavalry or captained triremes. Farmers were ranked at the middle. Urban craftsmen and trireme rowers know as thetes were know to be lower class. Slaves were also considered lower class and they were less harshly treated in athens compared to other Greek cities. Being a women in Athens was really hard because women were given little to no rights Athenian women were kept home and were not allowed to participate politics. Wives were considered their husband’s property. They were responsible for spinning, weaving and other domestic arts. Women and slaves were not considered citizens of Athens. The Athenian economy was mostly based on trade, since Athens had a large production of olive oil. The land around Athens didn’t provide food for city’s population. But Athens was near the sea and it also had a good harbour. So the Athenian’s trade with other country and city-states to get good and natural resources they needed. Like Athens sparta also didn’t have enough land to feed its population,So the conquered the land they needed from their neighbours. Not only did sparta capture their land, the also captured their neighbours and turned them into Slaves. These slaves were known as Helots. Helots lived in their own villages but they had to give up much of the food the grew on their farms to Spartan Citizen. The Athens women had no rights, however in sparta it was the opposite.
Women were also allowed to be citizens. Not on that, women were also allowed to get educated. In spata women were looked at the same level as men. In Athens women did domestic arts but in sparta, domestic arts were usually left to other classes. During war time women could control their husband's property and guard it until their husband came home.
Although Athens and Sparta have many differences, they also have some similarities. Athens and sparta spoke the same language. Slaves were not considered citizen in both city-states. They also had a assembly that was made up of adult male. Athens and sparta had a government that has a small council. They both also had many alliances and strong military.
