Topic: Light Pollution
General Purpose: To persuade
Specific Purpose Statement: To motivate my audience to learn more about light pollution.
INTRODUCTION
Attention Getter: Growing up, I watched a show called “Hey Arnold!” In an episode called Sally’s Comet, Arnold and his friend Gerald prepare for this comet before it passes over their town in two weeks. But there’s a problem: the artificial light from the town overwhelms the natural light of our stars. This is known as light pollution.
Statement of Purpose: That’s what I want to talk about today: light pollution and how to help curb it.
Audience Adaptation: It’s definitely something that should concern all of us. …show more content…
II. In short: it harms our wildlife. Let’s see two examples. (show slide #4)
A. In his April 7, 2016 article titled Illuminating the Effects of Light Pollution, Nicholas St. Fleur, a reporter for the New York Times, explains how baby sea turtles are put in danger by light pollution. (advance slide)
1. When the eggs hatch, they have to make their way to the ocean. They typically use the moon for this, but the artificial light from humans distracts the turtles, leaving them vulnerable to predators.
2. In fact, Professor McCormack described a visit to Sanibel Island in the interview, where the condo she stayed in actually posted signs warning visitors of this. Definitely sounds like a problem, if you ask me.
B. St. Fleur also mentions the plight of birds in the article. (advance slide)
1. Directly quoting the article, “between 100 million and one billion birds crash into buildings across North America every year.” At night, this is because of our bright lights. Why?
2. Because birds are also distracted by them, not just from crashing into them, but also circling them to
