Attic Lion

The characteristic aspect of Attic Lion is the proportion of the body. The lion’s head, torso, hips and limbs are well crafted and strongly connected. As the result, it would the boldness of a beast, just like the lions we see in zoo. The idea of the lion crouching stance strikes balance of the sculpture, it looks solid in this pose. A standing lion sculpture would be off balance than sitting or crouching ones. Another characteristic of Attic Lions is their movements. The sculpture shows lion crouching and bending, as if it was form a combat stance or holding a bone. The Dominance aspect of sculpture is the mane, as it is the stand out part, which drawn our attention. The sculpture has no unity or variety because it is just a simply a sculpted lion.
When comparing 325 B.C lion
The first Lion sculpture in comparison dated about 380 B.C lions, they are made of “fine-grained white marble and mica.” (Grossman 82) “height: 37.4 cm(14 ¼ in.); Length 89.9 cm( 35 1/8 in.); Width 22.3 cm(8 ¼ in.).” (Grossman 82) PP: These lions are rather smaller compare to those of 325 B.C. The lion was plain and simple, and there was very little details. Lion’s eyeballs are and big and deeply set in socket. Mouth is slightly open, reveals poorly carved teeth, which makes it seem like a smile. It has failed to create a serious attitude of a funerary lion. Mane is plainly crafted, hairlocks are flat and thin. The ears are made of “holes”, and rather hard to notice. The body shows little muscles and no blood vessels. There is absolutely no detail on the back, it is rough and flat. The
