Atticus
Atticus teaches important lessons to children- ‘You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it’ – ideas on empathy, looking past peoples negatives, not judging
Represents morality, see as Harper lee’s spokesman embodying themes of justice, tolerance, goodness and courage and her personal beliefs on them.
Shoots the mad dog to protect community- only one to stand up and do it. Harper lee talking about how people just stand back and let others to deal with bad things. Metaphor for racism, people just stand back and not do anything about it. Like for the tom Robinson trial, Atticus only one to put himself forward.
Knows he is going to lose case, still does it anyway as strong belief in justice. Atticus feels that the justice system should be colour blind, and he defends Tom as an innocent man, not a man of colour. ‘he’s the only man in these parts who can keep a jury out so long’.
Focuses on positives- forgives Mrs Dubose for her rudeness.
Tolerant
Lets children attend Calpurnias church, tells scout not to use racist names, tells Helen of Tom’s death, stand guard outside the jail to protect him
He is unaffected by Mrs. Dubose's caustic tongue, Miss Stephanie Crawford's catty gossip, and even Walter Cunningham's thinly veiled threat on his life. He doesn't retaliate when Bob Ewell spits in his face because he understands that he has wounded Ewell's pride — the only real possession this man has
Dog symbolism-
Parenting style
Treats children as adults, honestly answering questions. When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness sake. But don't make a production of it. Children are children, but they can spot an evasion faster than adults, and evasion simply muddles 'em."
Dealt with his children more forwardly.
Tries to get children to see things in a different light, maybe Maycomb too.
