So far in To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is one of the most respected people in Maycomb. We have learned a lot about Atticus through what he says, what he does, and what others say about him. He is a father, a lawyer, and a great person that is kind, and accepting to everyone.
Atticus defended Tom Robinson in court when he was accused of raping Mayella Ewell. He was convicted purely because he is a black man, and Mayella was white. Atticus did not take that into consideration, because he is not racist like the rest of the town. He believed Tom was not guilty, as he would never rape a woman. All the evidence was there that, in fact, it was Bob Ewell, Mayella’s husband, who was guilty, not Tom.
Unfortunately, he did not have the jury on his side. He lived in the racist South, and there was nothing he or Atticus could do to change this. Although they lost the trial, Atticus did all he could to defend Tom, and was on his side the whole time despite the society surrounding him.
In the novel, we learn a lot about Atticus Finch from what he does. He is a great father to his children, Scout and Jem. He teaches them everything a father should, primarily how to be polite, and accept everyone, no matter what race they are, unlike the other citizens of Maycomb. He does this by explaining to them that you cannot judge someone unless you have walked in their shoes. He also teaches Scout and Jem to not judge someone who does not have money. He says to try “walking around in their skin” after Scout makes fun of Walter Cunningham for pouring syrup on his dinner.
We learn about Atticus in To Kill a Mockingbird by what others say about him. Miss Maudie says, “Atticus does the right thing; the thing that other people would like to do, but are afraid to do.” This thing is the way he carried himself. When he received the role to defend Tom Robinson in the trial, he made sure he did his best, and stayed alongside Tom the whole time, despite what the jury, and everyone around him believed.
In conclusion, we have learned a lot about Atticus Finch thus far in To Kill a Mockingbird; generally that he is brave, courageous, a great person, and an amazing role model for his children.
