mob I can see that my little girl is slowly but surely turning into an adult. Scout may not realize but she can save lives with her attitude, and I'm glad to see that people really can change. I got a call late at night from the sheriff, wanted me to "guard" the courthouse. I already knew why and when I asked Calpurnia if she could stay and watch the kids, she knew what was going on as well. As the children went to bed I grabbed a small lamp, a folding chair, and a small book to pass time. When I got to the courthouse I setup my chair, turned on the lamp, and opened my book. Throughout the night I thought of all the situations that could happen. They could beat me up, maybe even murder me. No, never mind, our people would never do that. All of these things I were afraid of but nothing scared me more than what actually happened. Although I thought I knew what would happen, something happened that I didn't expect. My greatest fear was realized just after the mob arrived. I was about a third of the way through my book when the cars pulled up. A group of about 15 or 20 men walked out of those cars, and I was mildly frightened by the sight of the group. They were all burly men, and men with nothing to lose. I knew what they intended to do when they got to tom, but I didn't know what they would do to get there. "He in there, Mr.
Finch?" A man said
"He is" I said to the man, "he's in there resting. Don't wake the poor man." The men started shuffling closer to me. All of them were whispering among themselves and some of the men had evil eyes.
"Now get out of the way Finch, you know why we here." Said another man. I stood broadly in front of the door, watching the evil eyes men and wondered whether or not I would be pushed or thrown out of the way but none of the other men seem like they want to berate me. Just as I was about to respond I heard a voice, "Hey, Atticus!" My heart stopped and I could feel a bead of sweat drip down my head. It was Scout, she had followed me to the courthouse. Then I saw Jem run after her! I wanted to yell at them and tell them to run home but they ran through the mob and the next thing I new it was me, scout, Jem, and an angry mob, face to face. That was the last thing I wanted to happen.
"Get them out of here Mr. Finch. Ain't no place for a kid..." A man said.
This man was clearly angry and distraught, but I agreed to the idea.
"Scout, go on home. Jem take her home now."
"No sir" Jem
replied.
Jem was pushing my limit but I didn't know if I should've been angry or scared. I in no way wanted my children to be caught up in this mess.
I keep pushing Jem to leave with scout but scout interrupts me.
"Mr. Cunningham? Is that you Mr. Cunningham?"
The mob froze and one man looked up at us.
"Ha! See it is you Mr. Cunningham! How are you doing today? It's me Scout. I go to school with your son, Walter. You remember me right?"
No response
"How's your son doing? I hope he's doing well. Shouldn't you be home with your son? I'm sure he'd love to spend time with his papa."
The men stand there shock. Especially Mr. Cunningham, who I hadn't noticed until now. The men look at each other with dim faces, they almost look ashamed. Mr. Cunningham takes off his straw hat and walks up in front of the mob.
"Umm. We're done here boys. Ain't no problem here. Come on now. Split up and uh...well...go home." All the men look at each other again briefly. They all take turns going down the steps and getting in their automobiles. Mr. Cunningham looks back at us, puts his hat back on and smiles at us as he walks back to his mobile. I never suspected that my children would be the ones to stop an angry mob. It has made me proud but sad as well, to see scout and Jem stand up like this. It's a sign that they're growing up, and it's come so fast. What scout did was amazing as well, though...I don't think scout understood what she did. I'm sure those men won't do anything like that anymore. They're all probably too ashamed to look at Scout the same after what she's said. After the men left I packed up my stuff and started to head back home. As the kids ran ahead I could hear a voice from behind me. "Thank you, Mr. Finch.” This moment has changed be for the better and it gives me hope for the future. I still don't understand the hatred among these people and what made them form this mob in the first place, but all I know is that you can get through to those people. It may seem like they have devilish intents but it's only takes one person, one child to defuse them. If anyone learns how, a life can be saved by stopping racism. I just hope it disappears in the future that this won't be a problem anymore. I think maybe, just maybe the world can be kind once more.
