Aund Magaret: A Short Story
Aunt Maude and Aunt Margaret, my grandmother's younger, twin sisters celebrated their seventieth birthday at an enormous family gathering, on Sunday. Since I am almost 16 years old, and have my learner's permit my mom let me drove. Of my fifty-six cousins, all but Erin, whom I had been especially hoping to see attended the celebration. Unfortunately the flights from Chicago- where Erin goes to nursing school- had been canceled due to heavy snow. Apparently, over 24 inches of snow had falls there overnight! Although I missed Erin, I enjoyed visiting with many of the eighty-five friends and family, who had come to the celebration. Aunt Maude and Aund Magaret were truly stunned when they were born. Mom and her sisters chipped in together to buy

I was nervous nonetheless; Palms sweaty, heart racing, and tear-filled eyes was how I met them. As soon as the sun set the band started playing and the people poured in. The whole neighborhood invited themselves and soon enough I was having trouble distinguishing between who was and wasn’t my family. Warmth filled the air with all the stories being told, all the long awaited laughs caressed our ears, and the love that poured out of everyone was enough to last a lifetime. My uncles if they weren’t embarrassing themselves from the lack of dancing skills they had, I could hear them singing their sorrows in tune with the mariachi band in the background. My Aunts filled me in with the town gossip of the last fourteen years, making sure not to leave any secrets out. Smiles painted across our faces, my cousins and I took to the dance floor, skipping around until our feet bore blisters and sweat drenched our clothes. My grandparents told me stories from when they were younger. They shared with me the story of how, despite disagreements from each other’s family, they fell in love and stayed together till this day. My grandfather recalled to me how he had tried numerous times to woo my grandmother with sunflowers just so she would let him walk her home. “She rejected the roses so I brought her the Sun.”, he…

During the senior citizens celebration, several people talked about the importance of the seniors. They talked about the seniors’ contribution to life and how they should be taken care of. Then all seniors sixty years old and older were asked to come up front for their recognition. Initially, no one would come forth. A member of the congregation had to escort those people who he knew were a senior to the front of the building. For some reason, they seemed embarrassed about going up front for such recognition. Once they were in front of the congregation, they were all given flowers. Then the microphone was offered if anyone wanted to speak. Some shared some funny stories. Afterwards, both preachers of the church, the permanent one and the other who traveled both spoke and prayed over the seniors. At the end of the ceremony, they had dinner.…

The wake was held in our family complex in Bulacan, with my father’s sisters taking over the whole service since Aunt Aile, Uncle Lito’s wife, was too distraught to do so. It was a hectic affair; my aunts and older cousins were scrambling around the compound the whole time, switching between finalizing Uncle’s last rites and greeting the guests while we, the younger ones, were busy serving as errand boys and girls. Seas of unfamiliar but similar faces streamed into the wake, all of them bearing consoling smiles and sympathetic eyes. Most were distant relatives of ours, while some were friends and co-workers who wanted to bid Uncle farewell. I admit that amidst the family traditions that were waiting to be fulfilled and the guests that were expecting to be accommodated we did not have much time to mourn truly for Uncle.…
