Austin Carlile
This is my project on Austin Carlile. It was to show how he inspires me, etc and this is my visual part of it.This is the speech i had to present to the class:“You have many options in life, Never make giving up one of them.” – Austin Robert Carlile. This man is an inspiration to millions. He has saved and changed thousands of lives, And I am among them. To any of mice and men fan, the ampersand is more than just a symbol.“The same kid, the first day of 10th grade, who stole my backpack, unzipped it, threw all my books in the snow, trashed them all. Then later met me in the P.E Locker room during 4th period, literally beat me up. Smashed my head on the toilet, Broke 2 ribs - Came to Vans Warped Tour in Denver, 2012, And I saw him in the crowd, Looking up at me on stage. And I later found out through family members that he has 2 kids, And didn’t go to college, Lives in the same town, And didn’t really do anything with his life.”The fact that Austin has been through many of the same things that some kids go through everyday, and has over come them, is one of the many reasons tons of people look up to him. When he was 17 his mother died on the corner of 2nd Street & Sebring Court, In LeHigh Acres, FL. His mother was his hero, and it caused him so much pain, but did that stop him? No. He wrote a song “Second & Sebring” Which he made in honor of his mom.”I got a call from my mom and I couldn’t take the call because I was working, She left me a voicemail, then two hours later my grandma called me crying, saying, ’ something happened to your mum.. go to the hospital.’ “I was freaking out. One of the ladies drove me because they didn’t want me driving because I was so scared, and as soon as I got to the hospital there was an ambulance pulling in and they pulled my mom off and that was the last time I saw her.”Some get the lyrics to this song tattooed on them in an ampersand form.As he was 20 he created a band called “Attack Attack” & made an album with them, Then later

When the query asking him about what symbol he would choose to represent him, he broke down the admittedly unfair expectation of a silly response. For the first time during this exchange, he donned an earnest expression as he attempted to seriously structure the words he wanted to say. Settling his thoughts, he decided that a fist would accurately embody him. With concise but genuine words, he simply explained that both him and a fist depicted strength. When asked what the importance of strength to him was, Andrew referred to an earlier question he was asked; “what is the greatest advice an older family member has told you that you still apply now?” His answer was “never let people get too close.” He explained that living by that specific advice has inadvertently built a wall of protection around him. With this wall, he is indifferent to painful dilemmas and it has prevented him from getting hurt. Andrew’s smile was not present during his explanation, but his honesty and emotion was…

I had attempted to paint similar to the older illuminated poems and stories put it ended up being a muddy mess and I felt the message of the lines were lost. Ink is my favorite medium to lose as well is digital art using a computer but I felt that was inappropriate for the assignment. The ink gave stark contrast and helped the crowd both stand out and hide giving you the ability to see all the individuals but the one you notice is the blue character who is meant to stand out as the speaker. The font was influenced by a font used in the art forms text book, while browsing the graphic design chapter there was a font used in the Tobias Frere-Jones work “Three typefaces, Nobel, Armanda, Garage gothic.” The first font “Nobel” really stood out because of how bold it was. Although I did not have that exact font I had a similar one called “Expo M” that I think is bold and conveys the message of the passage just through the design of the words. As I completed the work I thought if many people who could also use the message of passage, I have and will continue to share the message of the quote to those who need to know that they can have a…

My collage represents the theme of freedom and confinement from the novel “Of Mice and Men”. The novel is set in America during the Depression and this context is shown in the way I’ve used the front page of the New York newspaper from the day of the Wall Street crash as the A3 page for my collage. I’ve deliberately washed out the newspaper to symbolize that the Depression was important in the novel but didn’t take over the story. As a female, I was annoyed the way the novel made women out negatively by using words like ‘tramp’, ‘bitch’ and ‘tart’ and the way men in the novel used them as prostitutes, so my representation shows the freedom and confinement of Curly’s wife – I’ve given her power in my representation because her and the other women had none in the novel and I’ve made the men all fairly insignificant in my representation because it wasn’t fair that they had all the power in the book.…

There are three times she uses powerful imagery. Nikki Giovanni talks about how it’s not fair how there are kids in Africa that are dying from AIDS or how elephants are witnessing their families and communities being killed to the left and right just from their Ivory tusks. Or how a child in Mexico has to go searching for fresh water or something to drink because he is dying of thirst. Nikki Giovanni uses all these sad events to bring imagery into her speech and to show how there are all kinds of awful events going on in the world and nobody deserves to go through something as horrifying and as terrible as these events including the Virginia Tech shooting. She uses this to bring to light how terrible and devastating this event…

My final picture is about sports in the 1920’s. The Babe Ruth card represents more than a sport. It represents part of our culture. There were more than writers and musicians, there was baseball. This nation will live in now was brought up with baseball as its main sport. In the 1920’s baseball was at its all-time high and one of the most famous play was Babe Ruth who played for the New York Yankees.…

One of the most important beliefs that Americans share is that personal striving results in upward economic mobility. The foundation of this belief is the essence of what is known as the “American dream”. For those who follow this dream, the conclusion must be made that one can overcome any obstacle with the necessary talent and determination. One of the most popular means in increasing one’s social status is through sports. Sports are ideal for understanding the pursuit of the American dream because achievement and success is highly emphasized in all sports. Also, sports figures frequently play lead role in the “rags to riches” stories Americans hear from the media. No one in sports today can carry the title of rags to riches to rags to riches again as does Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton. Born on May 20th 1981, Josh was the first overall pick in the 1999 Major League Baseball Draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He was considered a blue chip prospect until injuries and a drug addiction derailed his career in 2001.…

Next, I used the idea web to show three different major global events and how they could have had better/worse outcomes. For example, what if Martin Luther King Jr. had never been apart of the civil rights movement? On the other side of the spectrum, what if no one had killed Martin Luther King Jr.? These both differ greatly from reality. I did this to represent the idea that we shouldn’t worry about whether or not our world is the best possibility, for it could be just as awful as it could be…

As a young child, I tended to become ill often. The doctors blamed my weak immune system on the fact that I contracted mononucleosis and was hospitalized for two months at a young age. The consensus was that over time my immune system would improve and I would outgrow any other issues. I continued to get very ill with bleeding sores constantly lining my mouth and throat throughout my elementary schooling. I noticed my condition was drastically worsening as I ended my sophomore year of highschool. I entered my junior year chronically ill. I missed over thirty percent of the year due to being so ill. I went almost all of junior year teaching myself the information my peers were able to learn in class. I became so physically tired that even getting out of bed was exhausting. I was living with such pain that my parents decided to seek the top…

    The Human Experience

The art work that stands out most to me is one that portrays a young boy as a soldier in the US Army. The human experience from this could be expressed as one of many, love, loss, pain, hope, despair, values, beliefs and as we hope not but even death. I think the artist had love, loss and pain in mind with the painting. This is meaningful to my life because I feel that this is a portrait of myself as a young boy. I joined the US Army at seventeen, finished my basic training, school house training and was shipped off to Iraq with my unit before I was even close to being eighteen. I believed in what I was doing, I lost a lot of family and some really great friends in that war. I too had a picture taken with my uniform and full battle rattle, as we called the bullet proof vest, on. In that picture I was all smiles but honestly I was extremely scared and felt almost alone. This picture shows a young man with the same uniform on smiling. It really takes me back in time and allows me to see what war did to the once innocent young smiling boy that I was. I still to this day believe in all I have done, know that somewhere in there I have done them for the right and values of America but still it bothers me now. It also makes me fear for the young boy in the picture, fear for the outcome that will happen.…
