Warranties are different to the automatic consumer guarantees, warranties are not compulsory, they are the voluntary promise made by the person or business who sold the consumer the goods or services. Once the consumer buys the product or service, the promise becomes a right that can be enforced under the Australian Consumer Law. The warranty can be expressed via different ways, it can be presented verbally or in writing. The warranty against defect is usually limited by time, and it can be either in a formal or informal way, alternatively, any material that has any writing about the promise can evidence the warranty against defect. Manufacturers, suppliers and the service providers must comply with that warranty, otherwise consumer can take actions against the business or person under the ACL or the contract.
Extended warranties
Some business may provide a choice of buying an extended warranty or care package which extend the length of the time under the protection of the manufacturer’s warranty. Some might tell you that the extended warranty provides you extra promises that you wouldn’t usually get, but this is not necessarily true as you automatically have the consumer guarantees that suppliers must comply with.
