December 2, 2013 In this paper, I have reviewed following two research that study the relationship between authoritative parenting and depression symptoms in adolescence:
1. The influence of authoritative parenting during adolescence on depressive symptoms in young adulthood: Examining the mediating roles of self-development and peer support, by Liem, Cavell, and Lustig at University of Massachusetts Boston (2010).
2. Control or involvement? Relationship between authoritative parenting style and adolescent depressive symptomatology, by Piko, and Balazs at University of Szeged (2012).
Based on previous research, there is a relationship between parenting style and depression symptoms in adolescents. Depression is a serious problem during adolescence and young adulthood. “Researchers studying depression across the lifespan find that individuals between the ages of 15-24 years experience the highest rates of depression of any age group” (Kessler et al., 1994). There are several causes determined for depression, and it: “may lead to less positive adjustment in adulthood” (Piko, Balazs, 2012). In many correlative studies the relationship between parenting style and depression in adolescent has been discussed.
