Established in the spring of 1860, Dry Creek Station was one of the latest stations built by Bolivar Roberts and his men. Dry Creek Station served as a break for both the Pony Express and the Overland Stage Routes. Indian outbursts were common at this station.(Dry) On May 21, 1860 four men lived at the Station: Silas McCanless, the station keeper, W. L. Ball, a Pony Express rider, John Applegate, and Ralph M. Lozier. McCanless was living and married to a Squaw Indian. The Indians that morning camped near the station and did not like the fact that McCandless was living with her, and the Indians demanded that he give her up to return to her tribe. The Indians attacked later that night, killing Lozier at the station and chasing off the other three…

Up early, the surface of the water was like glass, I unloaded the fly rod and headed back to the water with the dogs. Knowing that the prolific Utah Chub was a major food source in the reservoir, I tied a bunch of white and gold streamers in the weeks leading up to departure. I tied one on and made a couple casts, still targeting stumps and their roots. Just as the fly neared shore, a cutthroat shot out from under the stump and grabbed my fly. Unfortunately, it was a short lived flight as the fish shook its head and gained its freedom.…

I invite you to explore Black Canyon on the western slope of the White Mountains, about 20 minutes east of Bishop, California. This obscure canyon is a highly colorful, deep slash in the earth that keeps its many charms secret to all but a handful of Eastern Sierra visitors. It is an easily accessible location that does not involve a scary, butt-clenching drive on the brink of a thousand-foot drop into the abyss.…

The Pigeon River flows through North Carolina and right here into East Tennessee. The Pigeon River got its name from an extinct bird, which migrated through the valley of North Carolina. Although, the Pigeon River looks nice, there is something extremely harmful going on inside the river. The long-polluted Pigeon River in Cocke County has not been “fishable” or “swimmable” for over 100 years due to pollution. The river’s water has turned dark brown, and has a terrible odor. The reason behind this beautiful river being polluted is the Blue Ridge Paper Company. The Blue Ridge Paper Company, once part of Champion International Paper, in Canton, North Carolina, is a primary source of Dioxin and matter pollution that has been discharged into the river. Not only has the Blue Ridge Paper Company polluted the water, it gets worse, a couple years ago in 2004, after…

My name is Kellee Layne Benjamin, and I will be twenty-three years old on February 4th, 2010. I was born and raised as a mid-western in Columbus, Ohio. I grew up with a large family of all sisters, half sisters, step sisters and one brother totaling eleven children. I was one of the younger, but considered to be the middle because of the age ranges between all of us. I grew up with seven siblings including myself, and the other four siblings were grown and had kids already. I lived in a small suburb of Columbus called Westerville. Westerville is a place where everyone knows everyone, even though they had four major high schools within this small town. Westerville is a very friendly place, where not a lot of crimes were committed. Westerville was “dry” my whole life growing up, but has recently changed so that they sell alcohol in certain markets around town.…
Everyone is aware of the name Wake Forest University carries. Obviously, I too want to be part of the Demon Decan Community. Wake Forest embodies the community spirit that encourages intellectualism and promotes civic engagement. The biggest reason for transferring to Wake Forest University is the philosophy of educating the whole person. As an Aga Khan Foundation Youth Ambassador, I was heavily involved with sustainable projects that had a purpose of solving challenges the ambassadors identified in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. Neither of our projects were one day projects, or charitable in any sense. Because the Aga Khan Foundation focuses on sustainable development, the ambassadors make sure to model the work and “Think globally, act locally.” Rooted deep into Wake Forest’s community is the…

My love affair with Mount Holyoke began quite innocuously, as many loves do. Exactly two years ago I received some mailings from the college—I originally began liking the school because of my intended major. However, in the last two years, I have found all the more reasons to deepen my adoration of Mount Holyoke College. The liberty of a liberal arts education will not only allow me to focus on my intended major but will also allow me to broaden my horizons to discover new areas of interest. My academic career at Mount Holyoke will be a drastic change from my high school career. Studying at Mount Holyoke College would be similar to discovering new land. I would arrive with purpose: the study of language will be my Plymouth Rock, my joy, but…
