Authoritative Parenting Style
Students’ intelligence is commonly measured by their academic performance in school, which differs from one student to another. It is believed that this difference is affected by the parenting style applied to the child (Steinberg et al. 1989, p. 1424). In order for children to achieve good academic results, the most effective parenting style should be applied. This essay will argue why the “authoritative“ parenting style is the most effective parenting style in terms of developing children’s intelligence.

The effectiveness of the authoritative parenting style is evident in the statistics of the measurement of intelligence in different parenting styles. Parenting styles are categorized into four categories which are authoritative, authoritarian,

Unlike other parenting styles, authoritative parents have both demanding and responsive criterium (Alegre 2011, p. 57). Authoritative parenting style involves two theories: "behavior control" and “acceptance" (Steinberg et al. 1989, p. 1525). According to Steinberg, behavioral control is defined as a control which limits and monitors their children’s behavior and actions. Steinberg also described that acceptance is a state where children accept the rules that were imposed on them because they understand and accept the reason why the rules were set. In other words, authoritative parents do not only enforce rules, but they also explain the basis and reasons why the rules and regulations need to be obeyed. As a result, children who go through this style of parenting and teaching develop more positive attitudes than their peers because they are treated warmly, democratically and firmly, which consequently affects their academic performance (Steinberg et al. 1989, p. …show more content…
144). According to Wendy and Richard, children’s self-regulation is increased because of two separable dimensions in authoritative parenting, which are namely “autonomy support” and “structure”. Autonomy support uses techniques which encourage children to solve their problems independently (Wendy & Richard 1989, p. 144) while structure is defined as the clarity and consistency of the guidelines, rules, and expectations set by the parents (Wendy & Richard 1989, p. 144). In their study, Wendy and Richard found that children who valued “autonomy support” and “structure” had a higher self-esteem than others who did not value them because they were clearly motivated and they were constantly trained to manage their own problems. It enhanced school performance because it is essential to have confidence when approaching learning tasks in school such as homework, assignments, group projects and most importantly, presentations (Wendy & Richard 1989, p. 144).

In conclusion, authoritative parenting style is most strongly associated with improvement in children’s intelligence. This was evident in the statistical and theoretical evidence which showed that children who has authoritative parents and went through authoritative parenting has a more positive attitude and outlook, and they also

    Baumrind (1967) suggests that the majority of parents display one of three different parenting styles. Authoritarian is the first style of parenting considered by Baumrind. This is where the parent uses strict discipline and leaves no opportunity for the child to negotiate. An example of a phrase used by an authoritarian parent may be “No you can not”, however, this may lead to the child rebelling at some point, therefore making it hard to impose rules.
