I jolted from my bookish stupor, quickly hiding my newest book under my bed. I knew from experience that the Headmaster didn’t make empty threats, and I don’t know if I could handle having nothing to read in the upcoming weeks. Samhain was approaching, and it was going to be pretty dull. I still wasn’t allowed to help with the annual Ritual of Revival, in which the Headmaster contacted the worshipped gods of our town and asked them to provide us with a fruitful harvest.

“I’ll do it, just gather your things and continue your studies in the kitchen. There should be another pot of ink in the cupboard. I hesitated. “But I can fix it, I swear!” “I think you’ve done enough, Authria.” He replied, and I knew he wasn’t just referring to the ink. Not reading the lesson, saying I didn’t want to be a wizard... the Headmaster had a short fuse, and I had already caused it to run out. I swallowed a lump in my throat and headed upstairs with my things. It doesn’t seem like a lot to be upset about, but I always wanted to make him proud of me, even though I didn’t always do as he said. I just wanted him to see my point of view for once; I guess I thought that maybe if I kept bucking against his word, he would finally sit me down and ask me why, and for once listen.
