Autism: Fitting the Pieces Together Through Education
Autism is a neurological disorder that affects a child’s socialization, speech and learning.
Finding proper education for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be challenging and stressful. “Many schools teachers do not have proper training and a lot of teachers only teach Exceptional Education (ESE) because it pays better. This does not make them experts” (Parker 10). Educating the teachers on the disorder is a must if there is going to be any success in children with ASD. There need to be teachers who are there for the children, and who have the knowledge, patience and understanding that it takes to work with these kids. The school system needs to provide a classroom setting that enables this success, and the learning resources need to be available, as children with ASD often find it difficult, if not impossible to learn in a normal classroom setting. There are many school districts nationally that limit, and then stop providing education to children with severe autism, as they do not have the resources available to educate them past a certain level. Most importantly, there needs to be a way to make the equipment and devices used for the education of children with autism available for these students.
“Nationally, the rate of diagnosed cases of autism spectrum disorders has doubled in the past decade, because of an increase in public awareness of the disorder. Effective autism treatment programs, mostly based on a therapy often requires 40 hours per week of one-on-one instruction” (Winerman para 4). “It will cost approximately $6 million to support an untreated uneducated autistic person to age 50, if you spend $150,000 and they become capable of normal learning by third grade, that’s a huge savings” (Winerman para 14).
