Working in the field of human services is a unique, yet rewarding career. Human services workers engage with diverse populations and carry different titles to include counselors, case managers, milieu therapists, social workers, etc. Regardless of what title a human service worker may hold, communication between a client and professional is vital. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a client from a particular background and address his presenting issues. It will review how I would interview my client to include specific communication techniques, ways I would establish a working relationship, discuss possible boundary issues, and recommendations or referrals to certain groups for this client.…
Human service professionals are taught to understand their client’s as well as the role they play in their life professionally. The most important part of that is understanding that it is a professional relationship and should be nothing more than that. Boundaries are put in place in many different parts of a person’s life to help them understand what they are to do and where they are to avoid. This is also something that is implemented with human service professionals. They are taught boundaries for themselves and given the tools to help their clients’ understand what their boundaries are. It is done so that the clients’ can receive the best possible help there is for them. The following is going to explore different boundaries and relationships between a client and the professional, what to avoid, and the best possible solutions if a boundary is compromised.…
The Human Services profession is an occupation where one is not limited to do just one job or one sense of duty. I discovered the profession is a more of a mission rather an occupation where one who is pursuing this career must be caring, patient, willing to set aside one own personal viewpoint and must be able to work with a wide range of diversity. More importantly, able to perform on a professional level, with the client’s best interest, despite what one may feel is justifiable.…
A reciprocal relationship between client and human service practitioner requires mutual respect, cooperation, shared responsibility, and negotiation of conflicts toward the achievement of shared goals. This understanding is important…
In this paper, I will be describing the range of problems facing human services clients and how the specific helping skills that can be used with clients. There are many problems a human services faces with a client. The needs can range from helping clients with issues such as, substance abuse, mental or physical illness, grief, disabilities, caring for children and families, domestic violence, Veterans, and a personal loss. Also, a human services clients can have a large range of family problems that can lead into more difficult problems. (Woodside & McClam, (2011).…
Consequently, compassion brings an emotional toll on the human services professional, so another essential trait is the knowing of one’s limits and establishing these boundaries early in the association to prevent burnout which is a detriment among human services workers in all professions. “It makes sense that an emotionally weary individual would be less disposed to make the emotional investment required in dealing with clients as individuals rather than as depersonalized cases” (Drake & Yadama, 1996).…
Many influences on a person’s life privately and professional can come into play when working with clients in the human service profession. In the helping profession we need to take into account our experiences, cultural up-bring, and communities where we lived in. Just as much as those play a part, our clients are reflecting the same thing when they come to see us. They are looking at us through their beliefs and values.…

I became fascinated in adolescent development after taking an entire class on it. The class taught me a lot of the explanations to why I felt the way I did throughout my own adolescents. Adolescents are at a point in life where the brain has developed fully emotionally, but rationally their brain is not established. So it does not matter how smart the adolescent is they are ruled by their emotions, this is why I want to be there to help them. I want to be a professional person outside of the home that adolescents can come to talk…
Being self-aware and conscious of my impact on others is a necessary element of reflective practice and is crucial to building relationships. Qualities such as ‘integrity, genuineness and self-awareness’ are central to developing empathy and an understanding of social work values. Although self-awareness is required it is also a necessary aspect of taking a professional responsibility for my own learning and…
Within the UK, the National Occupational Standards (NOS) specify the standards of performance that different professions, including counsellors, are expected to achieve in their practice, and the knowledge and skills they need to perform effectively (NOS, 2014). The NOS for counselling covers the same professional standards as the BACP (2013), there ethical framework is based on the belief that, “All clients are entitled to good standards of practice and care from their practitioners. Good standards of practice and care require professional competence; good relationships with clients and colleagues; and commitment to and observance of professional ethics” (p. 1). Seeking self-awareness or self-understanding is a major component of effective…

Many people engage in community service project because they are either forced as a punishment or sentence. Others engage in community service out of Spirit of unselfishness, or a desire to connect with their communities by helping out. For me, it brings a sense of completeness. During the past few semester my team members and I have engage in different projects, Collecting food, clothes and donating to the homeless. In a way I’ve experience working the different organizations and helping the community. But with this particular project, it meant much more then collecting for the disadvantaged, It was about lending a hand and your heart to a community in need.. During my involvement in this fieldwork project I got the opportunity to offer my unconditional assistance for one day in a non-profit making community based project. The name of the project was Liberty City Construction, which is being undertaken by a Christian ministry organization whose aim is to improve the livelihood of low-income families through building affordable and decent houses at a 0% interest rate. The organization founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda fuller has built and rehabilitated more then 100,000 families in need, becoming the world leader in addressing the issues if poverty housing. They work in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all social, economic, and ethic group to expand communities with people in need by building an renovating houses so that everyone can experience God’s love and can live and grow in to all the God intends. For that particular day, three of my group members and I…
For our third week of clinical, my group and I presented on the topics of heart attack stroke, and heart disease at DOF. As a group, we were able to inform the group of men, with information that they would be able to think about and remember as they continue on with their lives. After DOF, we headed to Goodwill. As we spent time with the clients at Goodwill, I hanged out at one of the tables, where I spent some time looking at semi-truck photos with a client. It was nice spending some time with the client and getting to see the kind of photography he likes. The last part of clinical took place at Heartland Senior Center. At Heartland, we had the chance to complete assessments on two clients and practice writing progress notes. The clinical day was a success as I learned new things, had fun at Goodwill, and practiced my assessment skills.…
Self-efficacy is defined as “the belief in one’s capabilities to organize and execute the courses of action required to manage prospective situations” (Cherry, What is Self-Efficacy?, 2014). Self-efficacy is not the same as self-esteem, which is how valuable an individual perceives themselves to be. An individual’s self-efficacy is the belief they are capable of accomplishing a task, even when the task is challenging.…
