Away from the Post Office In the year of 1941, post offices were very different in comparison to current post offices. The working age was different, it was used more frequently, and there was no internet to take the place. In the story “Why I Live at the P.O.” by Eudora Welty, the scene is set in a house on the 4th of July. A family issue has caused an unsettling between members of the family. One of the members of the family named Sister, believes that her sister Stella Rondo has separated from her husband and brought home a child named Shirley T. However, Stella Rondo does not want anyone to know that it is her child and claims it is adopted. While Sister is trying to prove it is Stella Rondo’s daughter, Stella Rondo turns everyone in the family against her. This causes Sister to finally give up and take all of her belongings to live where she works, the post office. Although it may seem that Sister and Stella Rondo two different people, they are in many ways similar. Characters such as Uncle Rondo and Mr. Whitaker shared opposite traits. However, Sister and Stella Rondo shared many similar character traits. The three traits rudeness, temper, and entitlement were not the only character traits that these two shared. However, these traits were the most abundant and obvious traits displayed by the two characters. The quote, “Im getting tired of your meddling. This town aint big enough for the two of us” from the movie The Western Code is what the story “Why I Live at the P.O.” reminds me of. The two sisters, Sister and Stella Rondo were unable to get along within the house and therefor Sister decided to take her belongings and leave the house to live at the town post
