David Dunn, a security guard at a local college, is on a train on his way back from a job interview from New York. Suddenly the train begins to malfunction and it is derailed causing a horrific accident. David is the only survivor of the crash and is completely unharmed much to the astonishment of the nurses. He then goes to attend the memorial service to pay his respect to the victims. He says the kids at school call him “Mr. Glass” because he breaks like glass. In order to get him to face his fears his mother gives Elijah a gift; his first comic book.
Back to present time, David takes his son, Joseph, to “Limited Edition” which is owned by Elijah Price. Elijah mets David and explains his theory that if he was born with brittle bones there must be someone that is his complete opposite. That was born to be unbreakable. Elijah has searched for years for someone like this and he believes he has finally found that person. Although David finds Elijah’s thoughts interesting he still thinks he’s just a crazy nutcase.
David’s doing his security work at the stadium when Elijah shows up. Elijah tell David how in comic books it's normal men that become superheroes. How they must realize there powers and become something bigger than themselves. A man goes on to bump into David, which causes David to start patting down the fans coming in. This makes the man with whom he believes to have a gun leave the line. Elijah questions how David knew the man was carrying which David says he saw an image of a gun in his head after bumping into him. This suspicion leads to Elijah following the man David bumped into. While following the man Elijah ends up falling down a flight of stairs breaking his legs in the process. However, as he lays on the floor in agony he sees that the man did in fact have a gun exactly as David
