Aztec Religion Summary

The Aztec origins being in a city called Aztlan. Some claim this was a mythical place only from where the tribe came from but the author believes it laid north of the Valley of Mexico. The Aztec people were Native American Indian people who ruled much of Mexico from 1427-1521. Their religious system was very complex and they were polytheistic. Aztec religion was centered around temples where priests went to pray and worship along with doing rituals for their different gods to keep them in balance and strong. The author explains how the Aztecs viewed things so that it can better to understand their religious beliefs. The Aztecs believed that the world was a flat surface divided into five sections north, south, east, west, and center in
which their capital of Tenochtitlan was. They came to believe that there were thirteen layers of heaving and nine layers of the underworld, each of which had an accompanying god. They believed they were living in the fifth worlds because it had already been created and destroyed previously with the sun destroying all previous life.
