Persuasiveness is an important skill that each of us should learn as it is useful in many various situations. The older generation has to be persuaded to believe and understand that it is always possible to learn new technology. It’s simply a matter of keeping an open mind to the experience of learning as well as being willing to spend the necessary time to learn.
One way to convince them of the need to become electronically sound within the office could be by having
a trainer come in to spend a full day or two working with each of these individuals while convincing them that this will in fact simplify their basic day to day lives and the learning experience is a great to take advantage of this wonderful tool. Although very resistant to change, a little one on one attention could go a long way. During this training period it would show them how things would be run smoother, quicker, and with a little practice would be an overall improvement to their individual municipalities as a whole. Another way to push the idea is to assure them that these systems are not being placed to eliminate their human positions, but rather in make their job easier and help them to become more efficient. Remind them of how computers are the way of the new world and in order to remain relevant they will need to adopt this new wave of work ethics.
