Employers have a legal duty to protect their employees, customers, clients and visitors from injury caused by employees that the employer knows or should have known poses a risk to other (Woska, 2007). When conducting a reference or background investigation on an applicant, the most important and useful things to check for are criminal history, credit history, education history, and work history. A background investigation includes determining whether an applicant may be unqualified for a position and a reference check generally involves contacting applicants' former employers, manager’s, and instructors to verify previous employment and to obtain information about the individual's knowledge, skills, and personality. Credit reports reflects the applicant’s financial history and is used when an applicant is applying for a position that involves monetary accountabilities. This report helps an employer determine whether the applicant's financial status might pose a risk for the position. An applicant’s employment history is important in that some people include false employment history on their resumes to obtain a position. Employers often discover fabrications boosting the job responsibilities. Additional common untruths involve job titles, former employers, skill set, and time frame of employment. Candidates will generally provide names of people who they are sure will provide favorable feedback (Carter, 2015). And education history is important in that the employer needs to know how much education or certifications the potential applicant has. The colleges or universities that issued the degree or certificate are contacted for the education verification. Most degrees or certificates are verified by the institution's Admissions and Records department of that college or university .Some people list academic degrees they have never obtained or colleges or universities never attended. These educational checks verify if the applicant has valid education for the position being applied
