When children have too much free time they can get involved in gang activity, fighting, drugs and can also risk heading down the wrong path. By having “The Ball is in your Court”, students can invest their spare time into something that is more beneficial to themselves and the community. “Parents must work to see that the neighborhood is a safe place for their children to play, learn, …show more content…
and live.” (Violence Prevention Institution) By creating a program that allows children to invest time into sports, it will give children a safe environment without violence. Violence then will be removed from class rooms and throughout the neighborhoods to make the community even better.
Furthermore, with the help of sports, children will become more confident, self-disciplined, and can improve social skills. Self-discipline is the ability to purse what one thinks is right despite temptations to abandon it. Playing sports make children feel like they have a purpose. But, if the children have bad behavior, they will not be able to play, so they must have to make good choices to get to participate in games. They will also learn social skills by playing on teams, learning from coaches, learning how to work as a team to get the job done. “You work together, share time and other resources, take turns to play and learn to cope with success and failure as a team. These interactions facilitate bonding and lasting friendships with your schoolmates, which can help make children more sociable and outgoing as they grow.” (Live Strong) These are the positive affects sports has on children.
Not only will sports teach the children many life lessons, it will keep children healthy and in shape.
This program will not be solely focused on the health of the children but it will be a positive incorporation. With keeping children active, it will lessen their chance of being overweight, it will help them gain muscle, and acquire stronger bones. “One of the best ways to get kids to be more active is to limit the amount of time spent in sedentary activities, especially watching TV or other screens.” (Nemours) By giving students a free choice to play sports, it will reduce the amount of kids that sit around the house and do no physical
activities.
With programs like “The Ball is in your Court”, it is often argued that the program will have no money and that the programs will have no volunteers. However, the program will accept donations from the parents, churches, the schools, and local businesses in the community. Families will donate old gloves, footballs, basketballs, and any other necessities to keep a team running efficiently. Not only will money and essential equipment be donated, but the city, churches, and schools will provide the fields along with gymnasiums. When it comes to volunteers, there are many family members and people that have free time that are willing to coach teams. “About 62.6 million people volunteered through or for an organization at least once between September 2014 and September 2015.” (Bureau of Labor Statistics) To motivate these volunteers, they will receive community service hours while helping the children. In conclusion, “The ball is in your Court” will provide a safe environment for children to use spare time, it will allow students to gain important life skills, and additionally keep the students fit and in shape while participating in something fun and enjoyable. This program will essentially be ran by parents, schools, and churches. Children are the future of the community. By giving the students a program they can learn from will make the community a better and safer place.
