Band Analysis
When thinking of a band many think of it just being a collection of instruments. While that is true, it doesn’t fully encompass what a band is. A band has many parts and sections that come together to make its distinct sound and with this comes the different views of each band member. Many people in the band community are more or less defined by their instrument and which of the three categories their instrument falls under. Whether it be a Woodwind, Brass, or Percussion instrument they each come with their own personalities and stereotypes. But what does this mean? The first faction of the band is the woodwinds. This group of instruments is primarily characterized by reed instruments with the exception of the flute and piccolo. The reeds bring a particular color to the band that without it, the band would sound entirely different. Hardworking, snobby, and quiet people are what is said to be found here and the rest of the band constantly chide them about not being in tune. These players are the geeks of the band. They …show more content…
Percussion instruments encompass pretty much anything that can be hit with a stick including but not limited to trap set, bass drum, timpani, snare drum, etc. These people are categorized as laid back and cool, but occasionally they are called “intellectually challenged”. To this they reply that at least they aren't geeks like the rest of the band. Percussionists never practice and can be found in the back of the band room sleeping, on their phones, or hurriedly running to an instrument they forgot they have to play in a piece. Sheet music is forgotten in percussion land. Whatever they need to play will be either memorized or made up on the spot. They bring a type of spontaneity to the band that allows it to grow and go even deeper into the music. What would the National Anthem be without the signature drum roll and cymbal crash? Percussion is the seasoning that without them, the band would be dull and

The Hot 8 Brass Band, one of the well-known and traditional New Orleans bands, experiences several losses of members due to police gunshot. Sakakeeny illustrates one of the deaths in details. The trombonist Joseph “Shotgun” Williams was attacked by the police when he was unarmed: “when Joe moved towards the passenger door, officers filled his body with bullets” (152). The police suppression leads to the death of one talented musician; furthermore, the violence leaves the Hot 8 Band with severe shock. In the interview with Hot 8 Brass Band, all of the members indicate that the band is a symbol of family. Jerome “Baybay” Jones responds in the interview that the loss of a member is overwhelming “because we are all we have” (Nola For Life). Nonetheless, the brass band performed in Joe’s funeral; the composition of new songs becomes a way of expression: “frustrations, hopes, and aspirations” (158). The inevitable death brings insecurity to the community. On the other hand, it allows the brass band to perform in the funerals. As Gerard Cantor states in the interview that “music is like a medicine,” the musicians use music as a tool to response to the loss of their members (Nola For Life). In Sakakeeny’s description of Joe’s death, he contrasts gun with musical…

As for character of what I would bring to the band, I am laid back and easy going but I can be very strict when I need to. Whenever we aren’t doing something I usually chat or goof off, but when it’s time to begin, it’s time to settle down, so I center my focus and get right to work trying to get everyone to fall into line. I am very dedicated to music and band so there wouldn’t have to be any worries with my responsibilities for the band. Also, I don’t play any sports or do anything besides choir and band all year with the exception of musical in the spring and diff and AP…

Long ago, the drum beaters community had been earning their livelihood by serving and performing their skills in various social functions like marriage, child birth, idol immersion procession, marriage procession, welcome ceremony, political rallies, and other administrative purposes.
