The first amendment of the Constitution provides that "Congress shall make no law . . . prohibiting the free exercise [of religion].” Although expressed in absolute terms, this constitutional guarantee has never been interpreted as creating an absolute shield for every religiously motivated act. This does not mean all conduct bases on religious beliefs is free of governmental control; such behavior: “remains subject to regulation for the protection of society.” Prohibition of activities alleged to be based on religious tenets has been long considered constitutional if such conduct jeopardizes the public health, safety, or morals, or presents a danger to third persons.…
All the turmoil because of the government’s stance to try and protect as it is supposed to do without stepping on peoples religious rights( according to the Amendment clause) leads us to believe there will be more cases like this in the future. “This is not what the founders intended, nor is it the way we usually think about the two clauses of the First Amendment” ((Shmoop Editorial Team, 2008). “We usually think of them operating in tandem to protect our religious rights. But history has suggested that in many cases, it is the tension, not the harmony, between them that best protects religious freedom” ((Shmoop Editorial Team, 2008).…

Rome 's vast empire lasted for an amazing one thousand-year reign. Half of it referred to as the republic, and the other as the empire. However, after its fall in 5oo-a.d. Rome has still remained in existence through its strong culture, architecture, literature, and even religion (Spielvogel 175). Even after its disappearance as a nation Rome left behind a legacy that will never be forgotten. Its ideals and traditions have been immolated, and adopted for over two thousand years. Whether, it is through its language of Latin, its influence of religion, or its amazing architectural ability Rome has influenced almost every culture following its demise. The heritage of Rome has been passed down through three different channels; one is through the eastern Roman Empire; through the Roman Catholic Church, and consciously by any and every one who has been in touch with Roman Culture (Hadas 157).…
The majority of public school students believe uniforms interfere with their first amendment rights. When wearing uniforms, students feel their creativity and ability to express themselves are being affected, when in fact uniforms may curb negative behavior associated with student dressing. This allows the student to focus on school work instead of being distracted by the clothing.…
Ultimately, the debate struck in 2004 when the secularist country of France forbade students in state-run schools to display any form of religious symbols. The bans of religious affiliated garments, such as the veil, escalated from schools to now being in public settings. The law was finalized in April 2011, “prohibiting the concealment of one’s face in public places” (Grand Chamber). Although the law was passed nationally for France and Belgium, other countries in Europe such as Italy are following the same route in banning the covering of faces in public. Many people still choose to wear it because they believe it is their human right to do so.…
2) Religious ideaology is no foundation for any laws. We do not have laws prohibiting the eating of pork nor do we have laws against pre-martial sex. Laws should be based off of logical reasoning from the point of general and secular beliefs, not the beliefs of one specific religion or group. Our country was founded under these principles of freedom from religious fundamentalism.…
Despite the protests from within the community, polls show that 80% of the Canadian population and 95% of the Quebec population supports the motion to ban those wearing the niqab from government services, (Reynolds, 2010). This bill would be isolating a select number of Muslim women who wear the niqab in Quebec, and instead of rescuing them from oppression, who be denying them of their basic human rights as a citizen of Canada, not only encouraging women not to wear the niqab in public, but if they work for public services also not allowing them to wear the niqab, (Chung, 2010). Considering the fact that Canada is considered a secular nation, as well as being globally renowned as a tolerant, accepting nation, a government ruling which would prevent a specific group pf people to have to choose between expressing their interpretation of their religion or accessibility to public services is seemingly unconstitutional. However, if Canada was truly a secular society, as secular society is considered to be by John Locke in A Letter Concerning Toleration, a bill as such would not be…
For the past decade, schools, parents and students have clashed over the issue of regulating student attire. In 2007, cases involving an anti-Bush T-shirt in Vermont, an anti-gay T-shirt in San Diego and Tigger socks in Napa, California, made their way through the courts, causing many to wonder whether this debate will ever be resolved.…
“ The establishment of religion clause of the first amendment means at least this: Neither a state nor the Federal Government can set up a church” ( Driesbach 11). Freedom of religion is very important. The quote up above is saying that the government can’t set up a church that everybody has to go to. All the different cultures is what shapes the United States. It brings us closer in a way. Religion is what most people's lives are based on. The people should be able to choose a religion and practice it whenever or however they want. In the late 1800’s a church was founded and it was called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) or Mormons. This church and the leaders were persecuted for some of their beliefs. They were chased…
The most important amendment is the freedom of religion. The freedom of religion lets you be who you are. The government can’t punish Americans for any religion you practice. There are not really any limits to this freedom. The first reason the freedom of religion is the most important amendment is because it lets Americans be their true self. You are being your true self if you are practicing a religion that you truly believe in. Nobody should take advantage for who you are or what you practice. Take World War II for an example, innocent jews had horrible stuff done to them for just practicing a religion. Nobody should ever have to go through something like that for just being who they are. Without the freedom of religion in America, innocent…

In the United States, we have this constitutional right called freedom of religion. That is in all circumstances not just in a select few. In the workplace for example you have the freedom of religion. In my opinion, a company should but also should not have the right to discriminate on religious beliefs. Companies should be allowed because the person being discriminated against could bring bad vibes, bad intentions, and an unsafe work environment. An example, is if there was a newly immigrated syrian refugee that applied for a position and was all covered in religious garb and was extremely difficult to understand. This applies to all religious people that dress in their religious garb. Another example would be if a person that was an atheist…
