Barbara Ascher On Compassion Summary
In high school, I took a graph design class and we were learning about pictures and how each picture out there is made of small pixels that you cannot really have a picture without, and you need to zoom in and focus to see these pixels but each pixel alone does not have any meaning. Only when you put these pixels together that is when you start to notice the small details that makes the bigger picture. After we took the pictures outside, I had to reread “on Compassion” by Barbara Ascher and began to understand what she was trying to say this time. She just wanted to notice what is going around her and when she did, she had noticed different scenes that made her questions if they are done because of care and love or feeling they are obligated to do them. in her paper she said, “ Twice I have witnessed this, and twice I have wondered, what compels this woman to feed this man?Pity?Care?Compassion?”(page 47).She shows different stories with the same question, why are they doing this? and as a reader, you can not really decide or have an answer either. In the same time, I like how she shows two sides of the story like the woman was afraid of a homeless guy, but in the same time she showed how she gave the money to her baby to give to the old man, which shows that she wants to …show more content…
In the music video of “Starman”, he paints this idea as he stands in the middle of stage alone singing his song wearing these weird colors which were weird even for that time. In the background, there was a lot of people dancing and having fun and dressed according to that time period. Even if you do not listen to the song and saw the video, you will feel like it is a person struggling to fit in even though that is all what he wants. You can only notice something like this if you take a step back and take minute to realize the meaning behind a song like

In Christina Sommer’s piece entitled Teaching the Virtues, she quickly states her position in thinking that ethics education in contemporary school’s need reform. Christina Sommer believes that in ethics classrooms in schools there is too much of a focus on social morality and not enough focus on private morality, and these students can benefit from a more balanced approach. Social morality refers to issues such as the death penalty, abortion, and physician assisted suicide. Private morality is focused on personal values such as honesty and helping others. In her experience, she thinks many students are moral relativists, which are people with an ambiguous philosophy.…

Nussbaum that describes two different sides of compassion. Throughout her essay, Nussbaum argues that compassion can either be positively charged or lead to narrow mindedness. Her argument revolves around several factors which include human dignity and judgement. There are many aspects about compassion that I took away from this essay. For instance, from the start of her essay, Nussbaum states that compassion, “shapes civic integration, but given, too, its obvious propensity for self-serving narrowness” (12). While compassion can enable humans to cross national boundaries and sympathize when a tragedy comes about, it can also, at the same time, lead to hurtful comments and prove to be a threat. Furthermore, it is not possible for us to build a lasting “concern for humanity” through compassion because of its “impartial motives” (12). There is a limit to how compassionate one should get, and once this boundary is crossed it can lead to drastic consequences. Additionally, it is hard for us to “trust compassion” because of its precarious nature (14). As Nussbaum states, compassion is, “an emotion directed at another person's suffering or lack of well-being” (14). This is generally where compassion directly connects with terror. For example, Nussbaum gives an example of the collapse of the two towers (world trade center) and how people reacted with different forms of compassion. For instance, people started to feel sorry for the women who were under the Taliban but also started to become more racist to Muslims in general. In the end of her essay, Nussbaum concludes that the only thing we can do as humans is to keep trusting our sense for compassion instead of not showing any sentiments at…

This is interesting because religion is a very important thing to some people. Its very personal and self-involved and the fact that she is involved because of her fiancé is a bit questionable until she makes it clear herself.…

She is a woman who isolates herself from her community with other because she doesn’t speak english. She isn’t from this country she’s an immigrant who doesn’t really know much yet and has trouble understanding people. I wish Cleofilas had left her husband, she would’ve been in a better happy place. I just didn’t like how she compared herself to shows because the problems that she watches affects her. It affects her because she has ways of imagining and proving that it relates to her situations. Her child is a way of making her happy in her life, she cares about her child and wants the best for it. I don’t like to see a woman like this cry so much in tears because of the way they’re struggling each day. Before I came into digital photography class, the most I knew about photography was that you point at whatever you want to take a picture of and then you shoot. After I took this class I have learned that there is countless more factors involved in taking a good picture. The first I thing I learned in photography were the different parts of it. I also learned the difference between a DSLR and a point and shoot camera. Then I learned that in a picture different types of elements are involved such as color, value, tone, intensity, space, form, shape, line etc. whatever the subject of your picture is there must be a balance of these elements or else the picture will not look good. These elements also help us focus on taking certain types of pictures. For, example, if you want to take a vibrant picture then you will have to choose a subject with different colors and how they contrast.…

In the song by Travie McCoy and Bruno Mars, titled “Billionaire”, the artists sing and rap lyrics that oppose practicing competitive elitism and individualism. In the music video, the two use a plethora of imagery and colloquial language to advocate being one with their audience. First and foremost, the video blatantly promotes a sense of belonging by having clips of the artists hanging out at a skate park and a beach with people who looks to be college aged. These two settings basically went back and forth throughout the entire production. The people did not seem to be excited because of the musicians’ presence, instead they continue to skate and drink beer as if it is a normal day.…
