According to Visit Berlin, more than 3 million people come to visit this panorama display of exquisite 20th century art forms each year. The Bode Museum has access to accurate moulds of original treasures in the Gipsformerei ( the cast studio), that were utilized to carefully recreate new versions of these lost treasures. The museum website also displays some of these selected works. Many master paintings that were destroyed are reproduced from careful prior documentation as monochrome, full-size images.
The Bode museum presents several rooms of exhibits with varying themes, the first being the room of the “Loss and Restitution” room. This room tells the history of the impact of controversial military decisions of German, Soviet, and American forces on this artwork, and explains the artworks’ evacuation and its restitution. One of the damaged sculptures shows a distressing yet interesting facial expression, as if it witnessed a crime!
The second room entitled “Remembrance” mounts full-size black and white prints of these lost paintings. One could feel a palette of colors missing, and listening to the audio about each painting gets some life back into these ghostly
