Barbieri Aldrovandi Dog
Giovanni Francesco Barbieri uses oils on a canvas as a medium to paint Aldrovandi Dog(1615). Despite the fact that Barbieri does not specialize in painting animals, he still paints the dog. This is exceptionally rare during this time period because using a large canvas and paint is very costly. Scholars say that this specific dog was the prized possession of the Patron, Count Filippo Adrovandi. Aldrovandi Dog’s use of scale and spatial positioning awes. Although the main figure of the portrait is the dog, there still are key components in which the patron reveals himself through the background. The large country house standing behind the dog represents the patron’s home. The dog stands out as the focus point of the composition with …show more content…
Accordingly, Berbieri incorporates both cool and warm colors in his painting, creating a balanced contrast of tones. The light source is behind the castle where the white light seeps into the blue sky. The light blue sky allows the piece to be very easy on the eyes. The dark green trees also compliment the sky by adding even more cool colors. The artist also shows warm colors through the bronze pillar standing next to the dog. The dog has a mix of brown, yellow, and orange which all are warm colors. Conversely, the home of the patron is a mix of both warm and cool colors where part of the building would be brown and another part would be green. The warm colors symbolize the homes and the cool colors symbolize nature, when both the warm and cool colors come together it means that the homes and the environment are one and in harmony. The brush work on the dog shows that the patron is treating the dog right, this is clear through soft and fluffy fur coat surrounding the dog in terms of texture. This is done by having colors that are similar next to each other. The artist also draws individual hairs surrounding the dog. Therefore this allows the painting to be very soothing through the color scheme and the texture, however there is a sense of sober. Because the owner was willing to pay so much for the dogs portrait, the patron may lack family members and would like to remember his dog

Barcelo also tries to bring a third dimension to the painting which otherwise would be only two dimensional by varying the depth of the painting by using various layers of paints. The figure and the gold embroidery pops out of the painting due to a thicker volume of applied pigments in those parts of the painting. The light seems to be coming directly above the figure which implies more focus on the subject and the figure staring at the bowl is more distinct. The use of primary colors in this painting is limited only to the globe which has blue color representing the water in earth. The right side of the painting is lit up by the gold covered walls in the painting whereas the left side is darker giving an emotionally jarring emotion. The painting has a lot of texture due to the uneven layers of colors around it. The figure is inside a triangle which shows it is the main subject and the painting is balanced equally with the pile of books on the right and the globe and an open book on the left though the painting is brighter on the right side compared to the left. The time in the painting is difficult to distinguish as it represents everything indoors. The scale and the proportion is true to the real world. There is a repetition of the bright and the darker patterns through the color gold and silver. “Barcelo while returning to Mallorca in 1976, he joined the avant-garde group “Taller Lunatic” and created wooden and glass boxes filled with rotting food in a meditation on decay and metamorphosis. While he would soon turn away from conceptual art, this early interest in the metaphoric potential of the transformation of organic matter persists throughout much of his oeuvre” (Meadows Museum). Barcelo in this painting gives a perfect example of what he has learnt with the pigments with his…

Bierstadt created the perfect gradient of dark to light colors from opposite ends of his painting. Established on land, the hue of darkness swept into the lake, but the color was only to be amplified by the light created from the sky. This line amid the water plays a powerful role in the painting where the two opposites meet to form a single, unified harmony of colors in the middle. The disposition of the rays emitted by the sun, asserted a sense of depth as well as texture to the painting. Though the mountains created were of the same height, it was the existence of light that created saturation of…

There are white horses, which symbolizes purity. He put an American flag in it, to symbolize the patriotism. The mood is eager, determined, and war ready. In the painting, the imagery patterns are: red, white and blue, and light to dark from left to right (Leutze George Washington crossing the Delaware). They both are about fighting, and have horses and water.…

The brown is a reference to land. Without land human civilization would not exists, for where and how would we live? As land is the foundation of human civilization, so is domestic labor the foundation of many families, for how would some families accomplished anything. Many families need someone to work at home because of childcare, socioeconomics, or it just is in the best interest of the family. The bright orange is a reference to the sun. Her bright, orange dress means that she is the sun in this painting. The sun provides warm and energy to our planet, and without it, Earth would be an ice ball, the end of human civilization; thus, without the nurturing of homemakers most homes would fall apart causing society to collapse. By placing the mother and child in the center of the painting, Hooch states that domestic labor is vital to the survival of this family; thus, merits recognition. The benefits of domestic labor are seen through the clean, orderly, and bright house. Domestic labor is important for without this homemaker this house would be a disaster because although running a house appears easy, it can be very difficult. Homemaking is physically draining, time consuming, and a specialized job when balancing the needs of a household. Running a house is far from being a series of simple chores, it is one of the foundations of society, for without of the homemaker other family members…

The red symbolizes anger, because the dark-skinned man cannot tame the three prancing horses, causing the man to become frustrated. I am arguing that Graham’s painting is meant to provide laughter for the viewer, the horses are a symbol of mockery. The painting is interpreted as a circus due to the oddly dressed dark-skinned man in the bottom left corner of the painting. The dark-skinned man seems to be dancing along with the horses as they parade in circles.…

When he went to the Soviet Union with President Ronald Reagan a decade ago, and they did not ask for a blue dog, but a painting of a Reagan on a white horse, and Gorbachev on the ground, holding his hand out in friendship. The soviet officials were unhappy with it. Most people can say whatever they want about the witty Blue dogs, Mr. Rodrigue’s paintings of what seems to be the same dog stamped on various landscapes, portraits and situations. Some people and critics say that it isn’t really art at all. What started off as a fantasy for his long dead companion has become a lasting impression, with 1,200 or more Blue Dog paintings and artwork since 1984. There are even paintings in the White House, Whoopi Goldberg’s house, Tom Brokaw’s house, and to the houses of admires. Even the vodka brand, Absolut, has ads with the Blue Dog. His artwork can range from a few thousand dollars to $250,000. Rodrigues was awarded a Gold Medal for the arts, and was honored by the Salon des Artistes of Paris. “I’m surprised by people’s reactions,” he said. It is not unusual, he said, to have people stare at the Blue Dog paintings and cry. ''The yellow eyes are really the soul of the dog,'' he said. ''He has this piercing stare. People say the dog keeps talking to them with the eyes, always saying something different.'' ''People who have seen a Blue Dog painting always remember it,'' he said. ''They are really about life, about mankind…

I think the painting is a form of expression in which the intention is to give the viewer an increased awareness of how we have become a materialistic society. Because of our increased desire for the better things in life it is easier to allow ourselves to become distracted and lose sight of what is truly important in life. As a society we want to strive to be better in everything we do. In the past our american culture has taught us right from wrong, to love God and country and to stand true to our families. The importance of those morals and values seem to have disappeared. The black bird or raven can be a positive symbol of mankind's desire to be moral and spiritually…

Some objects in the painting are a pregnant woman, a burning candle, a skull, and a cross lying on the table under some books. The way the woman’s head is rested on her hand and she is staring into the candle light, shows that she is in deep thought. I believe that the woman is reflecting upon her life. She looks to be pregnant, which represents life. The unity of…

You have a dog that is growling, this indicates that it is afraid and is showing aggression, something that is not all supposed to be happy, but it is made to look like it is smiling by turning the painting upside down. The dog is supposed to represent humans, and it shows how we are sometimes in a situation of discomfort, anger, or pain and yet we are made to smile and act like everything is fine against our will. This is due to pressure about keeping up appearances, or just not being able to share your feelings with others because of receiving backlash from them, we see how people care so much about not appearing weak, or being an emotional inconvenience on others that we just pretend that everything is fine when it’s…

I believe this painting shows a loss of identity. This is the reason I chose this as my favorite piece of art, because I can relate to it. There came a time in my life where I was struggling with my own identity. In today's world it is very significant to identify oneself with at least one thing (ones ethnicity, nationality, race, religion, or a particular belief). Many people still grapple with the notion of identity in many countries, regions, and various ways in order to fit or adapt into any environment (social, economic, cultural, political, etc). One’s identity determines ones position or situation in society wherever one lives. However, finding the right type of…
