Merriam Webster defines “Barrel Racing” as a rodeo event for women in which a mounted rider makes a series of sharp turns around three barrels in a cloverleaf pattern and the fastest time wins. Barrel Racing is predominately a women’s sport but outside the rodeo world there are many men that compete in this sport in local associations, play days and the National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA).
Barrel racing was sanctioned in 1948 by the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association. In the professional world you would compete in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) or the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). In either of these associations the faster the rider completes the pattern the higher up on the leader board the rider will land with the fastest time winning. The object of barrel racing at the rodeo is to run as fast as you and you horse can to the first barrel where you have the option of choosing the left or the right barrel for your first barrel. The premise of barrel racing in the NBHA is much like the rodeo barrel racing only there are two differences. If a rider or horse knocks down a barrel they are disqualified and instead of just the fastest time winning all the money the places are divided into divisions. The NBHA broke down these divisions into D’s. 1 D time is the fastest time ran, 2 D time is the fastest time ran plus .5 seconds, 3D time is the fastest time ran plus one second and 4D time is the fastest time ran plus 1.5 seconds.
