Basketball: The Greatest Sport Invented (Outline)
General Purpose: To inform
Specific Purpose: To inform the audience about the history, basic rules, and the development of basketball.
Introduction
Attention Getter: There is no “I” in team, but there is in wIn. This is a quote from the 6x NBA Champion, Michael Jordan.
Thesis: The game of Basketball is a very exciting sport. You need to be able to communicate with your teammates. The only way to win is with the help of your teammates and not to be selfish. When no one on team is selfish with the ball, the team will succeed big time.
Preview: So, today I will be discussing about the game of basketball, the basic rules and …show more content…
regulations, how the game has developed over time, and how to be able to unite as one team and not be selfish.
Transition: Let’s start first with the history of how basketball first got started.
Body
1) The early Olmec people of ancient Mexico played the first basketball game about 500 years ago.
a) The Aztec and Mayans had a very similar game. Except they used decapitated skulls of their enemies instead of a rubber ball.
b) Invented in December 1891 by Dr. James Naismith
i) To train athletes during winter
c) Before, points were scored by getting the ball in a peach basket
d) Iron hoops and hammock style baskets were first introduced in 1893
e) A decade after there was finally open-ended nets.
Transition: Next, I am going to inform you all about the basic rules of basketball just to get you all started playing.
2) The rules for basketball are pretty easy and no too hard to understand.
a) 2 teams with 5 players that are trying to score by shooting the ball in the basket
b) Courts are rectangular and there’s a hoop at each end
c) There is offense and defense
d) When a team makes a basket from inside = 2, outside = 3
e) Game is divided into halves for college, quarters for NBA
f) To begin the game, the referee tips off the ball at half court
Transition: So, since we know a little about the history of basketball and the basic rules, lets talk about how the game of basketball has developed over the years.
3) Who would’ve thought that Dr. Naismith’s “Peach Basket Game” would become the worlds greatest indoor sport
a) Subsitutions
i) Initially weren’t allowed to reenter ii) 1924, allowed players once iii) 1934, allowed twice iv) 1945, unlimited
b) Baskets
i) Originally, used Peach Baskets ii) 1892, replaced by heavy woven wire rims iii) 1893, cast iron rims
c) Ball
i) Used soccer ball, then the first rubber ball was made by a bike company ii) 1929, basketballs were redesigned to bounce more iii) 1942, started molding basketballs
d) Scoring
i) Initially, one goal was one point ii) 1896, one field goal was two points iii) 1977, 3 point shot was adapted by NCAA & NBA
e) Dribbling
i) Originally, couldn’t bounce ball ii) 1901, bounce one time iii) 1909, continuous dribbling and shots off dribble
Conclusion
Summary: The game of basketball has to be one of the best games ever invented, the rules may seem hard but it is an amazing game to play with your buddies Restate Thesis: Basketball is a very high tempo sport and the ability to communicate with your teammates and not to be selfish with the ball is the best thing a player can do.
Definite Ending: I do know, though, the feeling of finally getting the chemistry flowing between your teammates. Hopefully, one day you all will get the chance to play this amazing sport.
