Unit Overview
In this course, students will acquire the English language skills needed to produce paragraphs at an intermediate proficiency level. A variety of reading selections and discussion activities will serve to prepare students to compose descriptive, expository, compare and contrast paragraphs that reflect critical thinking and analysis. A range of writing themes will assist students to develop a broader scope of knowledge and awareness on global issues. Paragraph development will progress to the production of an organized essay by the end of the semester.
In addition, the course uses an integrated-skills approach to help students understand and practice English grammar centered on thematic instruction. Grammatical skills will be developed through formal instruction, and individual/group editing. The controlled and communicative practice and learning environment will incorporate critical thinking and ongoing assessment. Students will gradually gain confidence required to communicate in English more accurately and fluently; and express themselves accurately and effectively in academic writing.

Overall Course Objectives
The objectives of this unit are to:
1. Equip students with the English language skills required to write from paragraph to essay more accurately and coherently.
2. Prepare students to develop and write different types of academic essays (descriptive, expository, compare and contrast essays)
3. Enhance the level of confidence to write and speak English with clarity.
4. Develop active reading and comprehension skills.
