Throughout the course of the last nine weeks, my eyes have been opened to an entirely new world full of nutritional and exercising information. It is rough being a thirty-three year old husband and father, with an eye on trying to remain on this planet for as long as humanly possible. As parents, we all have goals we want to achieve. The usual suspects include seeing your children graduate high school and then college, walking your daughter down the aisle of her wedding, and being able to retire and continue to live a healthy and happy life. What I have come to realize through this nutritional and exercising information is that in order to accomplish this goal, there are certain aspects of my life that I need to change. I am not a particularly healthy eater. I do not exercise regularly. I mostly do what I can with the time I have available. I suspect this problem plagues many men across this country and around the world. In my state, the obesity rate is close to 30% and it continues to trend upward (Centers for Disease Control, 2011). Without a drastic change in lifestyle, I am simply adding to the statistics. The knowledge I have gained in this course has led me to believe that this is simply unacceptable. Something has to change, and I have a plan to make that happen.…

I had been overweight since my early teens, as time passed it continued to worsen. at the age of 15 I was on the brink of obesity; I had to decide a change in my life. My life had consisted of school and video games; these combined had led me to an unhealthy lifestyle. I had dedicated years into my video game hobby, but this was the least active of my time. My hobby had to go, a new hobby had emerged: bodybuilding. Bodybuilding had given me a satisfaction that my previous hobby did not give, the satisfaction of working; that patience and efforts lead to greater satisfaction than momentary things like video…

As part of the summer reading assignment this year, I read the book Amazing Grace by Jonathan Kozol. In this documentary-style book, he told about the horrible yet completely realistic conditions of the most poor, rundown neighborhoods and districts in New York City. Kozol wrote the book for the purpose of telling the stories of the children who lived in these parts of the city. He dedicated his work to those children and it was his goal to inform readers that slums were in fact in existence and the children who resided there did not deserve to live in such a poverty-stricken area. The question "Why should their childhood be different from others across the country?" arose often and needs to be examined by all.…

Have you ever walked through parts of life then suddenly one day you realize what you were doing could have been detrimental to yourself all along? Most of the time you won’t even realize what you had been doing was wrong until somebody points it out to you, or you look in the mirror one day, and it hits you. This is my story about the realization of what could have been the stereotypical American health problem for many children in this country today. We’ve all seen this play out, the kids with the monstrous bellies opening their new toy from a McDonald’s happy meal. Looking back, I would have never known it was going to shape such a large part of who I am today. Inside the blue walls of Thornydale Elementary was where I realized I was becoming an America’s poster child for the war against childhood obesity. First lady Michelle Obama would have been paralyzed with fear for the rest of her days had she spent one day with me back when.…

The book “Nativity”: ISBN 9780913441978, published in 2010, proves to be an engaging, yet informative piece. Written by, a Caribbean author, Lasana M. Sekou, the narrative of the poem is perfectly represented by its title. Sekou’s piece is concerned with the emergence, or birth, of a new culture through the oppression and enslavement of African people and the destruction of their civilisation, by the white Europeans. While the Europeans successfully managed to suppress the culture through their dominance, they were unable to foresee the new culture that was directly developed through their “intervention”.…
