Be Careful Of What You Wish For
Men are believed to be the most advanced creatures on earth. Previous studies suggest that men are developed from primates, or ape-like ancestors. Through millions of years of continuous evolution, modern men are born. Modern men wish for many things. Most of all, they wish for development.
Whoosh, flies a mound of earth. Swish, goes another mound of earth. Why is this happening? Who is digging the earth? Let’s take a closer look.
In the distance, I can see men digging the earth with gigantic bull dousers. Plants underneath the earth are squashed down to nothing. Later, I can see buildings rising from the earth. The buildings rise from day to day and finally there is a fully complete housing area on the ground which once is full of plants. Now there is nothing green there anymore. Wait a second, there is more. The greenery around the housing area is disappearing too. Soon, it is replaced by malls, schools, religious buildings and other concrete structures. Finally, the place is transformed into a town, then into a city, and finally a megacity.
This happens due to men’s desire for development for higher comfort in their lives. From a picturesque hilly area, they turn it into a mega township. From day to day, men build new things on earth. Hence, to support the everlasting demand for more land, they resort to cutting down forests indiscriminately. Every year, more and more precious trees are cut down for development at an alarming rate. No doubt development is good for a developing country. Without development, a country cannot progress. With development, the country can improve its placing in the world’s eyes. But, men tend to overdevelop a place. With the trees gone and factories built, the place is polluted from day to day. A century ago, we can see Mother Nature in its best equilibrium. Trees grow lushly everywhere while wild animals roam freely across the land. At that time, men are living peacefully in harmony with nature. All, in the name of development, men started its mission to transform a place; natural resources of Mother Nature are swept away. Animals lose their natural habitat and their population starts to shrink and eventually some may become extinct.
Worse, there is the pollution made by men. Air pollution, water pollution, and sound pollution. Just name a few, and you can see it happening now. Open burning coupled with forest fires, and is aggravating the problem of air pollution. Yet ironically, it is men’s action in the first place that causes this menace. In fact, as carbon dioxide and other harmful gases gather in the atmosphere, it creates greenhouse gases. These greenhouse gases prevent heat from the sun to be reflected back into space, and it is trapped in our atmosphere. As time passes, it heats up our earth. As a result, forests catches fire if the temperature is simply too high and rain barely falls. Moreover, open burning produces a lot of smoke which may kill animals around it. It may also get out of control and the smokes may drift to other countries, causing haze to happen. For example, the thick smoke and haze spread by the Sumatran forest fire in 1997. It was probably among the two or three, if not the largest forest fire in the last two century of recorded history. The haze affected Malaysia and Singapore. See? Forest fire and air pollution can cause problems to thousands and even millions people around the world.
On the other hand, another scenario is equally appalling. The toxic waste that is produced by the factories as a by-product is often disposed off irresponsibly. Where are they going to store this much unwanted waste? Easy, just dump it into the river and let it flow off, and say goodbye to it. Yes, that’s the solution. I believe that many factories owner does this every day. This irresponsible action does not only pollute the crystal clear water, it also kills the aquatic creatures in the water. Worse of all, it disrupts the ecosystem of a place. Men are also affected by the polluted water. As the amount of clean water decreases every day, pollution of water worsens the problem. In the near future, we may not have enough clean water for everyone.
Furthermore, heavy machines produce a lot of rumble. One can be intoxicated by the sounds of bull dousers if he lives near to a developing area. One can also be infuriated by the loud noise made by those jet engines of aeroplanes if he stays close to an airport. Studies confirmed that loud noise can damaged one’s hearing. Men may also feel a sudden dizziness if he is exposed to a loud noise for a long period of time. Once again, men are reaping the seeds that he has sown earlier.
Just like you, I do not defy development. I can apprehend why men has wished for development since a long time ago. Development has actually improved our lives, if there is no development since ancient times, we will never reach the pinnacle of success that we enjoy today. Nevertheless, be careful of what you wish for. Development may be good in some means, but it also corrupts our environment. This can clearly be seen in real life at present. It is acceptable to develop a nation, but do not overdevelop it. Life in a bed of roses is surely a tempting offer, but be sure that you are not overwhelmed by it. If you truly wished for a better life by developing, let me remind you, BE CAREFUL OF WHAT YOU WISH FOR!

With cities being “landscaped for human convenience” (127), it is no wonder that people are forgetting about the importance of nature. Suzuki argues that the urbanization of cities will lead to society “[losing their] sense of connection with nature” (127). This point depicts the problem of modern society, and Suzuki puts forward the possible consequences that can occur in the future. The fact that parents are raising their children to believe that “nature is an enemy” (128) shows the gradual changes in…

These factories and mills, in turn, become the disgusting aspects of nature that we hate to see. Similarly to Austin’s ideas, Dreiser touches on how humans see nature as a resource, not something untouchable. Dreiser says, “The ground under your feet is discolored by oil, and all the wagons, cars, implements, machinery, buildings, and the men, of course, are splotched and spotted with it” (Dreiser, 189). Humans build their factories, pollute the grounds, and walk all over nature. It is a caste system where the “unintelligent” are stuck at the bottom.…

Alexander Stille raises a similar question as to how man can at times prove to be too much for the environment even when they mean well by it. Through the overuse and high exposure of human waste the worlds natural resources can be sucked dry as well as rendered unoccupiable. Stille aroused and brought light to the world the misuse of the heart of India, the Ganges River. It was not through the traditional daily use of the river that brought destruction…

    Hegemonic Gender Roles

This role stemmed from the fact that men were considered as hunters. This means that men had to be able to brave the outdoors and feed their family otherwise their manhood could be questioned and this is the ultimate slight for the hegemonic male. Michael S. Kimmel states that “The hegemonic definition of manhood is a man in power, a man with power and a man of power.” In this case the man needs to be able to dominate his environment and his environment needs to yield to him. We see this manifested in major corporations use of the Earth and it’s minerals without any thought of sustainability and the ever worsening effects of climate change. Their refusal to take the matter seriously only points to a mentality that reaffirms the paradigm that states that the environment is merely a tool for the use of men in order to display their power. (Masculinity as Homophobia: Fear, Shame, and Silence in the Construction of Gender Identity, MS Kimmel, 2004, Oxford University…

In result, we are constantly in an innate state of great confusion. We feel that the way other men act is stupid, rash, unjust, shallow, and disdainful, and yet, we act the same way to our friends. We see ourselves as gentle, polite, eloquent men when we seldom say thank you or perform any caring notion towards someone. We see strength as one of our attributes yet when something heavy needs moving, we use machines and technology to get the job done. We believe that hard work is the best way to get a job done, yet when a job comes, we hire people to do it for us. We believe in self-sufficiency and in independence when grocery stores are the only way we get food and big corporations run the whole country. Men are weak, yet not afraid to fight for money. Men are worthless, yet without them, this world would be none. Men are trustworthy, yet able to backstab their friends. Men are wise, yet make the dumbest decisions. Men dream of fame, of family, of fortune, of freedom, of fitness, and of fraternity. Yet men are never satisfied with it. Serenity, true serenity, does not dwell in a man. This is why we…

One root cause that I agree with is that we, as a country have become obsessed with economic growth. We have completely lost sight of our environment because of greed. Like stated in our readings this week (chapter 3), people are more worried about how big their homes are or what the latest fashion is. Everywhere you look, be it on billboards or in the magazine you’re flipping through in the waiting room, you see very successful models with high priced gadgets. Sure, you will see the occasional field and stream magazine, but what is inside of it? Men, with nice guns and big diesel trucks. This becomes a threat because we are cutting down trees to build these very large homes, and we are buying diesel trucks and polluting the air from the fuel. I know it may not sound like much but times that by the amount of people residing in your city, now state, and finally the country as a whole. All of this adds up. “The lesson here is an old one: Protect your capital and live off the income it provides. Deplete, waste, or squander your capital, and you move from a sustainable to an unsustainable lifestyle.” (Environmental Problems, Their Causes, and Sustainability, 2004)…

The fear hovers, what if the words, “forests precede mankind and deserts follow”, come true. And the reality is that India is losing its forests at the rate of 3.7 million acres a year. The Article 48A of the Indian Constitution provides that the State shall endeavour to protect and improve the environment and safeguard the forest and wildlife of the country. To conserve the environment and to bring down the population of the world, which is 5.7 billion, Palkhivala suggests that development is the only solution. Fertility falls as the income rises, education spreads, and health improves. Nani supports compulsory sterilisation and…

Man has been closely related with the nature since the down of civilization. Nature is helpful for all human beings. Nature abounds with trees. Trees are one of the best gifts of nature. As the civilization proceeds towards development, valuable nature assets are also getting damaged day by day. So it is the ease with trees. Now the ecological balance is distributed and the life becomes difficult. Our life and existence on earth greatly depends on trees. So we should plant trees through an existence expedition and maintain our ecological balance smooth. The first and foremost thing we get from trees is oxygen. We inhale oxygen from air, which are provided by trees. Trees maintain the climate and the weather of a country. They help causing rainfall and save our country from destruction. Trees save our land from erosion and make it fertile. We get our major food production from trees we get our clothing material from trees. We also get some building materials from trees. Rural houses are mainly made by trees indirectly. We get furniture from trees which are provided by trees. Besides we get many kinds of medicines from trees. In real sense trees give us many things that we can not even count. In a matter of great regret the destruction of trees is common in Bangladesh. Our people cut trees at random. We use plants in the time of need but we can not plant more, which is greatly needed for for existence. Trees are the raw material of many industries, so it is widely used. People use trees as fuel in their kitchen, brick fields. They also cut them to make new houses. It is a great threat to our healthy atmosphere and our environment. The ratio of cutting and planting trees is very much different. We cut more but plant less. We have to plant more and more to prevent ourselves from natural disasters. Tress can be planted almost all the year but rainy season is the appropriate time to plant trees. Each and everybody should be conscious about that utility of trees and…
