Standard of living: The degree of wealth and material comfort avalaible to a person/community.
Standard of living is contantly increasing in developing countries, meaning more sources are needed.
Developments taking place: Belo Monte Dam – Brazil
Designed to divert 80% of the Xingu River’s flow – Will devastate an area of 1500 square KM of Brazillian rainforest, displace 40,000 people
Deforestation occurring to increase standard of living – More timber needed, more space needed for houses and roads.

Biodiversity: The variety of plant and animal life an area
Tropical rainforest biomes contain the greatest biodiversity in the world.
50% of the worlds species are found in the tropical rainforest.
Animals: Jaguars, gorrilas, forest elephants, orang-utans, toucans.
Vegetation – Dense canopies formed of three different levels
1st Layer – Upper canopy: Contains giant trees, e.g. emergent trees, growing 130m tall.
Prevent sunlight reaching the ground – also have drip spouts allowing the rain to run off.
2nd Layer – Understory/Lower canopy: Smaller trees, receiving less sunlight
Tough competition to fight for sunlight, as well as little air movement.
3rd Layer – Rainforest floor: Few plants are found due to the lack of sunlight, material decomposes rapidly.
